I read that Talk of the Town was the better of People Will Talk, but I should see it. Thanks, Peter.

Re: Re: Titles (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
Of course, tastes differ, though I suspect that very few people would consider any of these entertaining films to be among the ten best films ever made -- and that is the category. In earlier incarnations of this epinion, I was curious about whether "the best" was all but one or two of the ones you'd seen.
Also the boundaries of the category "comedy" are fuzzy, especially for Cary Grant movies. I'm pretty sure that George Stevens did not think he was making a comedy, though all that "white man's burden" Kipling cant strikes me as ridiculous.

Re: Titles (Reply to this comment)

Stephen, I've seen That Touch of Mink, Mr. Blandings and I Was A Male War Bride, also, but didn't include them. I've seen many that aren't comedies. If a movie makes me laugh a lot, then I consider it a comedy although it may be a drama too. I'm sorry you felt my comment on your review was insulting, but I felt insulted by you. If one is going to criticize someone, it helps to read well what they've written and say something positive too.
I think it's of value to note that everyone has their own tastes and opinions.

Geez, another spat on a comment board....... ! Anyway, Mr. Blandings is a pretty funny movie, I remember, although it's been a few years since I've seen it. Should watch again and refresh my memory. Actually, I really ought to watch a Grant film soon; it's been a while since I've watched one.

Titles (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
I did not criticize your title. Rather, you criticized me for not heeding it and I turned around and pointed out that you did not heed it yourself. The lame argument you make for classifying "Gunga Din" as a comedy could easily (better!) encompass "N by NW."
Unlike you, I don't leave insultingly titled comments that are irrelevant to the particular epinion or ask questions and not check back to see if they've been answered.
If I can infer an answer to my question, you have seen one Cary Grant movie you classify as a comedy ("The Bishop's Wife," which is not primarily a comedy) not mentioned in your listing of "the best movies ever."

Stephen, I found Gunga Din and Talk of the Town full of wit even if they have drama too. I've seen Bishop's Wife as well as all the Hitchcock movies and Charade. I did say I'd include them in the next essay. I will get I'm No Angel from Netflix, but doubt I'll find She Done Him Wrong or other early ones.

P.S. (Reply to this comment)

"Gunga Din" was not intended as a comedy, and the genre of "Talk of the Town" is blurred. But perhaps I'm not the only one who lost track of your title?

I lost track of the title as I scanned the late-career dreck, but the question about the lack of discrimination remains: this seems very close to a list of the Cary Grant comedies (rather than movies) you've seen.
From your response, I gather you haven't seen his early bout with his most determined "leading lady," "She Done Him Wrong"? And for comedies, what about Howard Hawks's hilarious, "I Was a Male War Bride"? (However, looking again, I see you did include "The Awful Truth." Not being able to see the epinion while in the comment window does lead to lapses...

Yes, I think I've seen it, but like Mr. Blandings I couldn't remember if it was really funny. I'll have to refresh my memory after a while.

Heavens, Stephen, I said this was his comedies only and part 1. Ever read the Bottom Line or first paragraph? I haven't seen his early, early work, but if they're at Netflix I'll rent them.

good list indeed. i, too, am quite the grant fan; but i had to wonder about the exclusion of one of his films, I Was a Male War Bride, which was quite funny in my book. Especially since you mentioned three other films he did with Hawks, I thought for sure this one would show up. Did you not like it?
Nonetheless, this review is a good reminder of all the films cary grant has made better by being in them.
take care,
chad.
