The Bottom Line New and improved for your reading pleasure...
Reading the Riot Act: Before last night's show in Buffalo, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready announced the band would no longer be playing the infamous Bushleaguer at it's shows. The reason? Fear of "alienating fans." Give me a break. Bushleaguer, while definitely not one of my favorite songs from the band's Riot Act album, was, for all intents and purposes, the song that gave the album it's name and this tour it's biggest cause. To not play Bushleaguer is a concession the band needs to re-think, despite the response it got on Long Island earlier this week. Pearl Jam has lost their balls so they can sell tickets...where the hell was this fear back in 1995? At the same time, it's good to see the majority who blindly support an "elected" president can suppress any dissent by using the guise of wartime "support." Bruce Takes It On the Chin So now Bruce Springsteen is taking it on the chin for supporting the Dixie Chicks and Pearl Jam, among others. Of course, I wonder if these fans realize Bruce was always to the left of things, or if rock fans are really just that ignorant these days. Music Piracy...It's Baaaaaaack The RIAA has been making waves recently, which of course, doesn't differ at all from normal. Their lawsuit against a Michigan student for BILLIONS is laughable. The IM's Kazaa users are receiving is laughable. They get p*ssed off because they push bands with marginal talent, and don't allow bands with untold potential to grow and develop at all, and they wonder why record sales are down...it's stupid. On the other side, NOTHING beats what happened to Madonna a couple weeks back. After flooding sites like Kazaa with fake tracks from her new album, with her asking over and over "what the f*ck do you think you're doing?", one fan struck back, hacking into her site and posting ALL the American Life tracks in mp3 along with a simple message: "THIS is what the f*ck I'm doing." CLASSIC. Album sales...Are You Listening RIAA? Kelly Clarkson, aka American Idol #1, hit #1 with her album. I don't care what the ratings say, American Idol is, along with the RIAA's lawsuits and policies, number 1 in terms of what is wrong with the music industry. Talk about molded, pre-fabricated, and fake, American Idol and their "winners" take the cake. They lost the only shred of credibility they had when they booted off the big black chick for some inane reason, knowing she was the most talented singer in the whole bunch. Great White...Once Bitten, Not Shy Great White says they're going out on a summer tour (possibly with fellow 80s rockers Warrant and LA Guns) to raise money for the victims of the West Warwick, RI fire. What a joke, how much money could be raised? And it's not all profits, it's "some" of the profits. Profit is, by definition, what's left AFTER all costs are paid. In other words, only PART of the profit is going to victims. What part? 5%? 10%? This is just their attempt to take advantage of 99 people dying, including their own guitar player I might add. Jack Russell can suck a nut. Jack Osbourne...That Makes Two Jacks Who Can Suck a Nut Yes, Ozzy's son is going into rehab. Maybe if Sharon wasn't busy cutting TV deals and trying to make her untalented daughter into a rock star herself, maybe she could actually be a PARENT to her son and kick some a*s. David Lee Roth...Hero or Publicity Craved Lunatic? So DLR puts out a press release saying he held a knifewielding intruder at gunpoint until cops arrive...only to be contradicted by the cops who say the "intruder" was actually a neighbor, that a knife was found, but no evidence that it was intended to harm, and that DLR wasn't holding the neighbor at gunpoint, he was just sort of there. Funny stuff. Of course, at the bottom of the press release (and the ensuing follow up stories), is a mention of DLR's new album and summer tour. How desparate do you have to be man? The Doors...AKA 3 Guys Who get Sued A Whole Lot First off, the whole "Doors reunion" thing is completely stupid. In the past 10 years, the remaining members have said that 3 singers have "perfectly captured" what Jim Morrison was, meaning that either A)they don't know WHAT Jim was or B)Jim wasn't all that great if 3 guys can come along in ten years and capture him perfectly. By the way, the 3 are Eddie Vedder, Scott Stapp and current touring vocalist Ian Astbury. Lawsuits are being filed at a ridiculous rate and the most ludicrous of them all is the one from Morrison's family. Get a life. Oh well, I always thought the band was highly over-rated anyways, and that Morrison was the most over-rated frontman in rock and roll history. Blech on Morrison, his family, and the remaining money hungry members of the Doors. THE BALL IS BACK, THE BALL IS BACK!!! Yes, finally Headbanger's Ball is back, starting May 10th on MTV2. OK, so 10pm is too early (it should be midnight like it always was), but I won't nitpick. It's about time it's back. Korn...Creating Follow the Leader 2 Is there any doubt now that Korn is rushing into the studio that they are going to create the wussiest album of their career? I mean, Untouchables was terrible, awful, one of the worst of 2002, but it was at least abrasive for a good amount of the record. Wow, them and Disturbed on the same stage, it's like a 15 year old metalhead wet dream come true! New Singles From Staind, Sugar Ray, and 3rd Eye Blind So what do I think of them? I'm loving the Staind song, I'm just hoping their guitarist has differentiated a bit in his playing on the hard rockers. The Sugar Ray song is kind of odd, I wasn't expecting something with that sort of kick, especially after they created a perfect pop album with their last record. I'm taking a wait and see approach on them. And 3rd Eye Blind seems to be trying to recapture all the pop fans they lost with their surprisingly good second album. Tis a shame, I actually thought that maybe, just MAYBE, they could put out another halfway decent album at least. Jay Z...Redrawing His Blueprint One sentence should sum this up: Release it the right way the first time you cash hungry dumbass! The Real Cancun...The Real Big Flop Take THAT MTV! Now play some f*cking music, break some new GOOD bands, and renew Punk'd, and you MIGHT be a halfway decent network again. Tis all for now, I'll surely be back in a few weeks with more!
