We got this unit last fall after the previous unit wore out. That unit, also a GE batch feed unit, had ran well and lasted 11 years.
Note: The epinions product title is wrong. Epinions titles this as BF760 Continuous Feed. The BF stands for batch feed. So, yes, I have reviewed the correct unit for this listing.
Replacing with a batch feed unit was the best choice. GE batch feed units are activated by pushing the drain plug over a switch in the drain and then holding it down for the length of time for the food to be disposed. Most units now are continuous feed. A wall switch is used to turn the disposer on and off. However, without a switch, it would clearly be easier to replace what we had with a similar unit.
I priced various models at Shopping.com, Bestbuy.com and Sears.com and ABTElectronics.com and settled on this unit because of the combination of power (3/4 hp) and price ($196 before installation and tax) and brand, since the GE unit had lasted for YEARS.
In addition to the power and durability, other features include a dishwasher drain connector, stainless steel cutters and flange, a manual reset button and a quiet insulation package.
I cant speak to the ease of installation, because the delivery person from ABT did it. He did do it quickly but not hastily. He showed us how to use it, just like the one before, and left.
This unit supposedly will take virtually any natural food waste, except for clam and oyster shells. The instructions for this unit suggest that large bones and fibrous husks be broken up beforehand as they take longer to grind. My wife and I decided to use this unit the same way as the last one. The instructions for the earlier unit said not to grind pits, corn husks, corn cobs or banana peels. Those instructions helped the earlier unit last 11 years, so we will continue that way.
Disposers grind most types of food waste so that they can go down the drain instead of creating garbage. The benefit of these units is reduction in solid food waste. The drawback is that the units do use water. In fact, my municipality recommends against disposers because of their water use. Perhaps not grinding the husks and pits will reduce water use. As for the village, after the outrageous way in which my property taxes are rising, they are HARDLY an expert on conserving ANYTHING.
My water use did go down a lot after we got a plumber to fix the toilets, which were running on. But I digress.
To use the unit, I put the food waste inside, turn on the cold water (the instructions say that it helps keep food together for grinding), push the stopper down on the switch and keep it on until 25 seconds after the food is ground. This, according to the instructions, helps rinse the unit. It seems similar to the unit it replaced. I can use the prior drain plug on this one.
If the unit is jammed, use a wooden spoon or implement to loosen it up. The instructions also caution not to use harsh chemicals, drain cleaner or lye in order to clean it.
The unit has a one year warranty.
This unit has worked great for the 6 months so far. I recommend it highly.
Thanks for reading. God bless.
