The Bottom Line This works well with older kids (ages 8 and up) who are jaded with traditional birthday games and can follow directions better than younger kids.
My daughter's 9th birthday was looming and we had to come up with something different. I actually enjoy at-home parties that both I and the birthday child can work on together. And since at home parties are so rare around here, they're actually a novelty. This year my daughter came up with the idea of a "game show" party with teams. Her favorites are "Beat the Clock" and "Family Feud". I bought yellow and green T-shirts on sale from the Rag Shop for each girl and pre-assigned teams so there would be no arguing at the party. As the girls arrived, and we waited for more party goers, they designed their own name tags like they wear on the game shows. Our opening game was "Smartie Sucker" where the two teams raced the clock (they had 75 seconds) to see how many smarties they could hold on the end of a straw and move them from one bowl to another about 6 ft. away. We did this as a relay. At the end we counted up the smarties and declared a winning team. The girls then ate the smarties (everyone's a winner!) The second game was "Cottonball Relay" where the teams raced the clock to see how many cottonballs they could move on the end of a spoon that is in their mouths. Again, we counted up and declared a winner. The third game was "Sponge Relay" where each team had a sponge and absorbed water from a central bucket and raced to their buckets at the opposite end to see who could transfer more water in 60 seconds (you can fiddle with the time set for each game). Our third game was a balloon drop where they put balloons between their knees and raced to drop the most balloons into a crate within 75 seconds. This was a little tougher as it was a bit windy! But the girls enjoyed it. Our next segment was to calm everyone down. I had used posterboard and affixed answers to "survey questions" I had come up with and the girls worked as a team to come up with the most popular answers for the most points. If the girls guessed one of the answer, I would tear off the construction paper cover to reveal the amount of points they won, a la Family Feud. My topics were "Favorite Nick Shows", "Favorite Kids Meals", "Favorite Kids Movies", Favorite Girls Sports", "Favorite Desserts" and "Favorite School Activities". At the end we added up the points and declared a winning team. We went inside for cake, which I had decorated to look like a 100 dollar bill with a photo of my daughter in the middle. When they were finished we went outside for the swirling whirlwind where I had set up a floor fan that I threw fake money in front of and the girls chased the money all over my yard. Whoever collected the most money got to pick their prize from the prize table (every prize was the same but in different colors.) It was embarassingly low tech, but the girls liked it! |
