Thanks Nate!
I was always partial to some of the long songs. I love Stars and Stripes of Corruption and Chickenshit Conformist. But it really is hard to pick a favorite, huh? ~Ryan

Dead Kennedys (Reply to this comment)

My all time favorite DK song has to be "Kill the Poor". However, I also have a special place in my heart for "Nazi Punks F$ck Off", "Holiday in Cambodia", and "MTV Get off the Air".
Great band. Great review!
Cheers

I thought you'd like him. Glad to hear you dig the mix. He's going to be playing at the Knitting Factory in June. I'll let you know when that show will be once I look it up! Peace. ~Ryan

He's much better than the Undead Kennedys. (or Living Dead Kennedys, either way) Thanks for the CD!

Thanks Courtney!
You place on my WOT is deserved, for sure! Even though I'm a bit random in how often I read, write, comment, etc., I do look forward to reading more from you.
Yeah, I've written short scripts too, which I do enjoy. I even have a few of those that are unfinished and festering just below the top layer of my brain. One day!
Anyway, thanks again for the nice comment. I'll be reading. ~Ryan

you make me nostalgic for... (Reply to this comment)
by folledeschiele
california..or even the valley--I never imagined that possibility! :) Keep in mind that I'm from the "profound" valley...i.e. Reseda/Northridge...area I would rate degrees more dantesque than your own Valley Village, which is "practically l.a." anyway...
more than content to be on your WOT, since I've truly enjoyed every piece I've read of yours thus far. your piece on the frustrations of writing/finishing projects was particularly honest and...dare I say...entertaining? I relate to that frustration and that inner sense that you're "never doing enough". I've been writing and re-writing, abandoning and re-adopting the same, ever-evolving and yet ever-stunted novel for 6 years, to put together lots of oxymorons in one sentence. All I can say is, everything you do is building mental prowess, enriching your skills and does NOT amount to nada. In my experience, too, the worst thing is to incessantly compare oneself to brilliant ingenues who produce first screenplays and novels at the tender age of 19--more often than not, they're not even ripe enough to have a true voice of their own. Take Zadie Smith, the hyped writer of "White Teeth". Yes, she writes brilliantly. But read some Salman Rushdie and you'll see that his influence on her is so overbearing that you think of him while reading her, without fail. Anyway, that's not to say that you shouldn't strive to complete projects. But maybe there's a reason why you haven't yet. What about writing scripts for short films first? Maybe you already have. ANyway, just to say that I empathize entirely...
Look forward to seeing more of your work and thanks for your comments.
Best,
Courtney

Sometimes it seems he knows his way around LA better than me! I took him to a coffee house in Hollywood called "Espresso Mi Cultura" and he was like "Oh yeah... I've been here before."
Ha! Anyway, I'm sure you'll be a trustworthy teacher. Glad to hear you're about to graduate too! Later. ~Ryan

Thank you Brian!
Of course, there are some really great punk bands coming up all the time, so I agree with you that I disagree with me that punk's dead! Heh.
I'm probably the 7 millionth person to proclaim Punk as dead! Jump on the bandwagon, it's fun! ~Ryan

Impassioned review, and i think you judge well the amount of detail (not much) to go into about the depressing state of Dead Kennedys band relations. I'm also glad you explained the Tammy Faye thing in the comments section...
I don't agree that Punk Is Dead -- like cells of the human body, it just gets replaced and renewed every seven years. In part, it does so by people like you who remind everyone what it's about. Great job, Ryan.
cheers,

Jello Biafra presented a show of hers late last year. The specifics of the show are hazy in my memory, but I remember being quite disturbed by the whole concept at the time. Unfortunately, I was unable to go and I really don't know much about it.
I tried to look it up online just now and couldn't find much mention of it, which leads me to believe it was not a nation wide tour. I suspect it may have only been a local, one-time show because the only reference to it I found just now was a one-line blurb about Jello Biafra and Tammy Faye Bakker performing together at the Palace.
At the time of the event, I was under the impression he was "presenting" (whatever that means) and would not actually be performing. Now I wonder what I missed by not attending!
I'll email the photo I have of Jello and Tammy kissing each other. In an interview I read, Jello skirted the issue when he was asked about his ties with Tammy Faye Bakker. I really don't know what to say about the whole thing. ~Ryan

a truly amazing review. Of course, I am too old to know much about punk - but I do understand your feelings about censorship - and how the band destroyed their best performer. Just another example of how ideals, friendship, or loyalty fall before greed. Your feelings of disgust about the police asking people not to abandon their babies are as frightening to me as they are to you. I hope many, many people read this review.

Sadistron: painful
Sadistron: it made me recall his flailings
ociferdown: haha
Sadistron: im getting all embarrased for him just thinking about it
ociferdown: I know!
ociferdown: and I kept looking at his mom, all beaming and proud of him...
Sadistron: oh man

ociferdown: and I feel like I don't ever have to do it again
Sadistron: true
ociferdown: well, thats what seeing DK was like
Sadistron: haha
ociferdown: heh... the best part of the night for me, was listening to Code 13 afterwards... that actually made me feel much better!
Sadistron: yeah, it was quite a relief
ociferdown: before that, I was oscilating between disgust and uncontrolled laughter
Sadistron: i spent more time staring at the girl next to me than watching those old duffers
Sadistron: man, was she hot
ociferdown: hey, I think some of the LA epinions people are getting together soon, and I want to burn a cd for one of the writers... can I come over one of these days and use your burner:-)
ociferdown: oh yeah
Sadistron: sure dude, anytime
ociferdown: but that girl... she was like the physical embodiment of all the stupid actresses I can't stand in LA
ociferdown: beautiful, for sure
ociferdown: but sooooooooo full of herself
Sadistron: of course
ociferdown: I liked the cute pierced girl by the stage
Sadistron: i wasnt looking for a soul mate, i just wanted to watch something more appealing than the train wreck on stage
ociferdown: haha... how about that guy with the red hoodie and the hat and the shirt that said "crack is back"?
ociferdown: I hear that
Sadistron: hahahahaha
Sadistron: oh damn, i forgot all about that
ociferdown: and the yeah... written in PEZ font
Sadistron: he looked so weasly too!
ociferdown: haha
ociferdown: my favorite was the skinny crazy guy in the wife beater screaming "Chemical Warfare Motherfuckers!"
ociferdown: wow

Ryan: I was never a fan of DK or punk (I'm an old fart) but this is probably one of your most impassioned reviews here. I also know the feeling of watching an idolized band shamelessly go through rigormortis before your eyes. Idealism is ultimately corrupted by commerce?
Who would have thought Rock is Dead and Pete Townshend would be a registered sex offender too?
Still the fact that cops have to remind people not to abandon their babies is a much larger and worthier issue to explore than the rot of music, time, and commerce. Thanks for reminding us all of that.
