Pros:Gentle on skin, may help eliminate dust mite
Cons:No nice clean laundry scent
The Bottom Line: I think everyone in our house is just a little better off since we have started using All Free and Clear
Laundry detergent gets expensive. After realizing Dreft wasn't doing anything to help my five year old daughter's skin we decided to try some other brands. Because I can buy it in bulk at Costco, All Free and Clear liquid has become our detergent of choice.
Bigger is Better
With five people, three of whom are big mess makers, in the house, I do a lot of laundry. Buying in bulk definitely save us money. With a push button dispenser I don't have to pick up and pour a heavy bottle of liquid detergent. The large bottle sits on a shelf over the washer where it is easy for me to access. There are two markings on the clear cap, 1 for small to medium loads and 2 for large loads. You can also use All Free and Clear in your High Efficiency washing machine.
What's this Free and Clear Business?
Gone is the familiar laundry fresh scent and pretty colors of most laundry detergent. Instead, what you have is clear unscented liquid soap. Unlike liquid Tide Free, All Free and Clear really does not have any smell. While the lack of fragrance and dyes is great for sensitive skin, our clothes do lack that certain fresh scent. I could take the time to sort out my daughter's clothes and do hers separately, but instead I just wash every one's clothes in All Free and Clear. And since my daughter's skin is rash free I really can't complain.
I would say that All Free and Clear works as well as the average laundry detergent in our house. That means it cleans regular day-to-day dirt but does very little on stains. I still need to pretreat any clothing that is really dirty if I want the stains to come out. It does seem to create fewer suds than most other detergents I have ever used and rinses cleaner and easier; something that I am sure further helps it to be gentle next to sensitive skin. Having used an HE washer for 7 years I would not hesitate to try regular All Free and Clear in one again based on its rinsability in my current regular machine.
But There's More!
All Free and Clear also claims to help remove allergens, in particular dust mites. We suspect that our younger daughter is suffering from some indoor allergies. Since we do not have any pets in the house and there is no mold, dust mites are the primary suspect. We are using allergy medication but, and maybe this is just wishful thinking, I do think All Free and Clear has helped her too. Her persistent nighttime cough is gone and we are no longer giving her cough medicine at night.
Final Thoughts
All Free and Clear achieves its primary goal; it removes regular dirt and odors while being easy on the skin. It seems to be helping to eliminate dust mites as well. For all that I am willing to learn to live without the nice scents of regular laundry detergents.
