Let's play 16 Questions

The Bottom Line Self-absorbtion can become habit-forming.

It seems the height of self-indulgence to do this so soon after Corpgent's "20 things about me" write-off, but what the heck; I know more about myself than about any of the products I've been reviewing, so I may as well. If you aren't enthralled by the questions I've answered here, blame prelude99 - it was his idea.

1. How long have you been a member of Epinions?
Since December 14, 1999.

2. What do you do for a living?
I'm retired, as of last summer. I spent 34 years working for Los Angeles County, and before that, three years working in a Maryland suburb of Washington DC. I occasionally develop and deliver Fundamentals of Writing and Business Writing training programs throughout California for UC Davis Extension. I'm also selling the business writing desk reference guide I wrote.

3. Favorite food?
I like everything. But as a complete carbo junkie, I can't live without pasta, bread, potatoes, grains, and stone fruit. I also love raspberries and good dark chocolate. Not to mention shellfish. Oh, yeah - and Indian cooking. And Serious Coffee. And...

4. Most embarrassing moment?
Where to begin...? I was at a conference when my contacts started bothering me. I reached into my purse for the artificial tears and squirted them into one eye before I realized I'd grabbed the lens cleaning fluid by mistake. Blinded, I staggered into the bathroom, in full view of the entire conference, which came to a halt as everyone watched to see how long it would take me to figure out I'd gone into the men's bathroom instead of the women's.

5. What are your favorite topics to write about on Epinions?
I'm a TR in H&G, and enjoy writing about the stuff that fills my house. But I also enjoy writing in general, so will write on anything that intrigues me.

6. Name a few things that you can’t stand whatsoever:
Spiders, mayonnaise, arrogance, cantaloupe, pomposity, carnations, illogic... For the complete list, check out my profile page.

7. Hobbies?
I've been a choral singer for more than 40 years, and that's my first love. I also love to cook and develop new recipes, bake, travel, read, collect penguins, do calligraphy. I need to get back to my hammer dulcimer and bowed psaltery.

8. What kind of car do you drive? What color is it?
My car does not represent me at all. We have two: a '97 Chevy Venture van and a '93 Miata. My dream car collection would include a '54 MG Classic, a Checker Marathon, an Austin-Healy MK3000, a Fiat 5000...

9. Worst time you got into trouble when you were a kid?
When I was three, my friends Janie S. and Ronnie R., ages four and five respectively, persuaded me that we should take our dollies for a walk. So we loaded them into our doll carriages and went to the park. Problem is that the park was a mile up a very busy street, access to it required crossing another very busy street, and the park was heavily forested, with a bridle path and a railroad track running through it. We had a great time, but when we left the park and found our parents waiting for us, theirs hugged them and kissed them and sobbed, while mine whaled the tar out of me, there and then and again later that night. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting hugged and kissed like my friends.

10. Have you ever been on TV? If so, what for?
Yah. Lots. When I was a kid at the UN School in NY, I was in an international folk dance troupe that performed all over the city. We danced for Eleanor Roosevelt and Dag Hammarskjold at the UN, at special events for celebrities, and on lots of TV shows.

11. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
Mostly classical, mostly choral, but I enjoy everything except blues, aleatoric jazz, New Age wallpaper music, and really noisy rock. I love Tin Pan Alley and Oldies.

12. What CD would your friends be surprised that you own? …
Allison Krause - incredible voice.

13. Shoes or sandals?
Sandals except in cold weather; then clogs. I live in Mephistos and my elderly but irreplaceable Romikas.

14. Where do you buy most of your clothes?
Chico's and department stores for "regular" clothes, and weird little boutiques for soft, touch-me-fabric items.

15. Have you ever met any famous people? If so, who?
Tons, mostly scientists. My grandfather was a Nobel laureate, as were lots of his friends, and I met most of them, including James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA. Also Eleanor Roosevelt, Thor Heyerdahl, Ralph Bunche.

16. What are your favorite TV shows?
I don't watch much TV, but used to be addicted to MASH - I've probably seen every episode. I also enjoy Law & Order reruns, China Beach - I think I just dated myself here! - Northern Exposure, and nature and cooking shows. But I'd rather read. Or write.

Aren't you glad you asked?
