Wings of Honneamise - a lazy air force member is chosen to be the first astronaut in space, they are struggling to complete the spaceship before war brings worldwide devastation. Meanwhile, our astronaut starts falling in love with a religious extremist.
A Wind Named Amnesia - A wind crosses the modern world making people forget everything, all of civilization, etc. The world begins anew among the litter and rot of the urban world. One boy, through circumstance can remember the way things were. He meets up with a girl who also seem aware, and they travel the city and countryside coming to grips with human nature.
Iria: The Zeiram Animation - 6-part series were a girl bounty hunter travels tracking down an unstoppable monster and tries to piece together how her past relates to the menace.
Blue Submarine #6 - 6-part series as well (I think it's six). A mad scientist has created intelligent hybrid animal-humans genetically and flooded the ice caps to essentially envelope the earth in ocean. A detached and understaffed navy along with a reluctant ace pilot go after him and try to understand their changing world.

Great list of anime...my husband has become a convert and we've already watched the "Cowboy Bepop" and "Noir" series along with a few others. I really loved the music in Noir, and the same person does the music for "BoogiePop Phantom" which is addictive but a bit hard to follow and complex. We also watched "Lain" which was dark/serious. I'll try to write a review of some of these others...at some point! Can't wait to check out those that I haven't seen though. We went to an AnimeCon in Santa Clara this year...it was crazy with people dressing up as characters. If you haven't heard of Newtype it is a magazine with tons of info and a demo disc with series snapshots.

Akira was one of the first anime's I watched, and it brought me into the world of anime. I then saw Cowboy Bebop and bought the entire series because it was so good!!! I recently encountered Kenshin, and that's amazing as well. I noticed however that you left out Samurai X(Continuation of Kenshin), Blue Sub No.6, and Inu Yasha. If you haven't checked them out, you should definately watch them. I was also wondering if you'd seen "Lain", as I saw it at the store and it looked interesting. Is it any good??

All hail. Haven't even seen this movie--but I'm DEFINITELY adding it to my Netflix list--but I used to read the comic, and this one truly is a classic. Nice one.
