Re: Re: Too Many Kids Are Depressed These Days!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
I'm glad the boy who humiliated your son got suspended. I hope that his parents have the good sense to reinforce that he DESERVED to be suspended for being so meanspirited!
If being a polite, considerate, sensitive, positive, nondestructive person makes you "gay," this world could use all of the "gay" people it can get!!!
It's great to know that this is becoming another opinion, because, when it comes to making the world an emotionally-safer place for kids, we've got to keep talking!
As they tell kids who are being abused, go tell someone--and, if that person doesn't listen, go tell somebody else, and keep on telling somebody else after somebody else until you're listened to and helped!!!
Many times, we have to act as the voices of these kids when nobody else seems to be listening to them!!!
Write On!!!

~~AJ~~
As always, you have written an extremely thoughtful comment. Thank you very much for your kind words and your obvious concern for my son and others teens going through depression due to life's pressures.
You hit it on the head when you mention the stigma of being lactose intolerant...he doesn't have the flatulence so much in school, but he does get bouts of diarrhea and stomach cramping if he eats the school lunches. The kids don't understand his disorder so Matt would rather miss a few days of school after an incident.
One time a kid called a local radio station and had them to dedicate a song, "It's Raining Men!" to my son. They said his whole name on the air!! The kids tease him a lot for acting "gay" simply because he doesn't curse, scream, rough house..he is raised to be respectful and well-mannered.
My poor son couldn't hold up his head for a week and refused to go to school. Finally he told me what happened and I went to the school. The kid in question was suspended!
Anyway, this is becoming another epinion! LOL

Too Many Kids Are Depressed These Days!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
I think that, even when it might not seem as if they are, too many kids are living under too much pressure these days.
One problem, I believe, is that there are more parts of life out there that they feel as if they need to "conform" to--and, when they (in their estimation) fall short, they get depressed!
I think that one of the most important lessons that can be taught to kids as they are growing up is to celebrate themselves!!!
Don't even get me started on this problem!
And look at those "reality" shows where people set themselves up to be "rejected"--and, often, not in a kind way.
Then, there's the "flaming" that goes on in Cyberspace--because it's just too easy to take out your frustrations on somebody you don't have to put up with seeing the tears in their eyes or hearing them cry.
I went through a period of being "flamed" and I know that it was very difficult on my well-being, and I'm an adult.
Imagine something like this happening to a child or teen!
And the flaming isn't just an Internet thing. The kids get it in school these days (usually, over not being the "ideal" body-size/shape and/or not wearing the "in" fashions), and the teachers don't take the time to put a stop to it!
Why, some teachers even participate!!! There was this jerk gym teacher I heard about who taped a sign on the behind of a middle-school girl reading: "Kick me! I'm fat!"
He shouldn't have done this even if she weighed a ton, but she was barely chubby!!!
I think he should have been relieved of his position and his teaching license suspended indefinitely!!!
If your son is lactose-intolerant, might that mean that he's also flatulent? If this is the case, he might have the stigma of not only being the new boy but, also, the new boy who's passing a lot of gas.
Anyway, when I think of what kids go through these days, it just really sets my teeth on edge!!!
My prayers are certainly with your son!!!
Hugs!

Katmar...
Thanks very much for recognizing the need for important essays like this one on childhood depression. Although I did see early signs in my son, he has still fallen victim to this sometimes debilitating illness.
I guess he got his depression gene from me or his grandmother...(sigh)
It is so important to take the meds daily as prescribed. I must stay vigilant with Matt in this area.
Thanks for the blessings and the comment.

Suffering from (Reply to this comment)
by katmar
depression myself, and not being properly diagnosed until I was 26, I can relate strongly to Matt. I just wish I had a mom and a family that recognized what was going on with me a little earlier. Thankfully, with people like yourself writing about depression in this manner, perhaps no one else will have to go through what Matt has. I've stayed in therapy too, and that seems to be my most stabilizing "force". I also never forget to take my meds, and I keep track - always - of when I start to feel "not quite right".
Thank you for writing this, and God bless you and your family.

Thanks, Virginia,
for the applause and the encouragement.
I am still having quite a time with Matt and although I do see his improvements, he still has a long road ahead of him. My hope is that he does not suffer the way that I did.
Prayer is the answer and I thank you for yours.
God bless,
Mimi

This Is So Informative and Helpful (Reply to this comment)

It takes courage for you to write it - and even more courage to help Matt the way you did. I applaud both you and Matt. I understand that accepting a problem and realizing you can be helped is that most important first step. I think you may have helped many a family here by writing this article.
I think that the power of prayer is also a big help in overcoming situations that are bigger then we are sometimes.
Bless you and your family.

Thanks so much, Sue!
I love all of my children, but Matt is my only boy. He was 8 weeks premature and lactose intolerant from the day he was born. It seems that he will always be Mama's Little Boy.
