The Bottom Line ”THE EVERLY BROTHERS” are Isaac Donald Everly born on 02/01/37 and his brother Philip Everly born on 01/19/39

Don was born in Brownie, Kentucky and Phil was born in Chicago, Illinois. They first performed together in public at age six for Don and age 8 for Phil on the “Earl May Seed Company Radio Show”. They first performed under the names of “Little Donnie and Baby Boy Phil”. Their parents “Ike Everly” and “Margaret Everly” were radio performers themselves and their sons appear on many of their parent’s shows. They first started making $5.00 (that’s what I said Five Dollars) a week or $2.50 each. A very good and close friend of Ike “Chet Adkins” helps Don publish a song he has written, “Thou Shalt Not Steal” selling it for $600.00. It is released by “Kitty Wells” and it peaks at #14 on the Billboard Country Top 100 singles charts on 4 December 1954. In 1955 the Everly Family moves from Shenandoah, Iowa to Knoxville, Tennessee. The Everly Brothers sign a recording contract with “CBS/Columbia” records.

On 9 November 55 the brothers record their first official studio tracks. They record 4 songs in only 22 minutes with Country singer “Carl Smith’s” backing band. Their very first single is released in February 1956 titled “Keep A-Lovin’ Me” with the flip side being “The Sun Keeps Shining”. The single fails to make the Top 100 singles charts. The other 2 songs they recorded “If Her Love Isn’t True” and “That’s The Life I Have To Lead” are never released. Columbia decides to release the brothers from their contract. They begin writing songs for Country legend “Roy Acuff” and sign an agreement with “Wesley Rose” to become their Manager. On 1 March 1957 Wesley convinces the President of New York based “Cadence” records to sign the boys to a contract. They record and release “Bye, Bye Love” that quickly rises to #1 on the Country Top 100 singles charts on 13 May 1957 where it stays for 7 consecutive weeks. It crosses over to the POP Charts and peaks at #2 for 4 consecutive weeks on 20 May. It stalls behind “Love Letters In The Sand” by “Pat Boone” that stays at #1 for 7 weeks.

In April 1957 they begin a tour around the state of Mississippi of Tent Shows. On May 11th they make their very 1st appearance on “The Grand Ole Opry”. On 12 July they appear for the first time on “Alan Freed’s” 1st show of “The Big Beat” on ABC Television. Other guests on the first show included “Frankie Lymon” “Buddy Knox” and “Connie Francis”. In August “Bye, Bye Love” peaks at #6 on the UK Top 100 singles charts. The single sells over 1 million copies and is their first gold record. They next appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show” on 4 August where they not only perform “Bye, Bye Love” but also their next soon to be released single titled “Wake Up Little Susie”. In September they begin a tour called “The Biggest Show Of Stars For 1957” that also included “Chuck Berry”, “Buddy Holly & The Crickets”, “Paul Anka”, “Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers”, “The Drifters” and “Clyde McPhatter”. On 30 September their next single “Wake Up Little Susie” peaks at #1 for 8 weeks on the Country charts and peaks at #1 for 4 weeks on the POP Charts. In December it peaks at #2 on the UK single charts.

On 10 Feb 1958 their very first album titled “The Everly Brothers – They’re Off And Running!” peaks at #16 on the Billboard US album charts. On 5 April they begin an 80-day tour of America with “Sam Cooke”, “Paul Anka” and “Frankie Avalon”. Their very next #1 single is “All I Have To Do Is Dream” that peaks at #1 on the POP Charts for 5 weeks on 21 April and peaks at #1 on 28 April on the Country Charts where it stays for 3 weeks. The flip side of this hit is called “Claudette” and is written by “Roy Orbison” and charts separately and peaks at #30 on the POP charts on 5 May and peaks at #15 on the Country charts on 16 June. Both songs hit #1 the same week in July in the UK where they stay for 7 weeks. Their next single “Bird Dog” also goes to #1 where it peaks there on the POP Charts for 1 week on 4 August and peaks at #1 on the Country charts on 18 August where it stays for 8 weeks. It peaks at #2 in the UK on 15 November. On Christmas day they headline “Alan Freed’s” “Christmas Rock ‘N’ Roll Spectacular” at the Loew’s State Theater in Manhattan in New York City. Other artists included “Chuck Berry”, “Bo Diddley” and “Jackie Wilson”.

16 January 1959 they appear on a UK Television show called “Cool For Cats” and they receive the New Musical Express Award as the World #1 Vocal Artists. On 2 March they record their very first songs ever in Stereo. Their next Million selling single “(‘Til) I Kissed You” with backup singers the “Crickets” from “Buddy Holly and The Crickets” peaks at #4 on the US POP Charts on 17 August, peaks at #8 on the County Charts on 31 August and peaks at #2 in the UK on 24 October. The #1 song in the UK the same week is “Mack The Knife” by “Bobby Darin”.

They decide to leave “Cadence” records and on 17 February 1960 they sign a 10-year recording contract with “Warner Brothers” records worth 1 Million Dollars. Their very first single release on their new label “Cathy’s Clown” peaks at #1 for 5 weeks on the US POP charts on 18 April eventually selling over 3 million copies and becomes their all-time biggest hit. On 23 May it becomes #1 in the UK where it stays for 8 consecutive weeks. The single apparently in the UK is the first ever released by “Warner Brothers” records as it has the catalog number of “WB #1” on it. Also on 23 May their newest album “It’s Every Time!” peaks at #9 on the US Album charts and #2 on the UK Album charts in June and becomes their biggest selling album of all-time. In July “Cadence” records begins releasing some of their older stuff that was previously never released. Between July 1960 and October 1962 they released 4 of their older unreleased singles that reached the Top 100 US POP Charts. Cadence also released one additional Album titled “The Fabulous Style Of The Everly Brothers” that was a compilation oh hit singles that peaked at #23 on 22 August 1960. The album peaks at #4 on the UK Album charts in November but only 4 songs are the same as on the US version.

On 30 January 1961 their hit single “Ebony Eyes” peaks at #8 on the US Charts and the flip side “Walk Right Back” that charted separately peaks at #7 on 6 February. “Ebony Eyes” peaks at #1 on the UK singles charts on 27 March. It had peaked at #25 on the US Country singles charts previously on 6 March and would be their last Top 100 Country single for 23 years. On 19 May they begin their very own record label called “Calliope” records. They are locked into the contract with “Warner Brothers” so they cannot release songs themselves on the label but they started it to help up and coming New Artists to it. They get in a disagreement with their Manager Rose on what songs to release and on 26 June they hire their new Manager “Jack Rael” who was the Manager of “Patti Page” for 15 years. In July they get their next UK #1 single in “Temptation” that had only peaked at #27 on 29 May on the US POP Charts. On 25 November both brothers are inducted into the US Marine Corps Reserves with an initial 6-month active duty hitch. They are assigned to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California serving with the 8th Battalion working as artillerymen.

Don gets married in February 1961 to “Venetia Stevenson” who had previously been married to “Russ Tamblyn” an actor, dancer, gymnast and acrobat. His biggest accomplishments were starring in “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” and also starring in “West Side Story”. Venetia was also a Movie Star having appeared in 7 Films from 1958 to 1961 and the biggest of which was titled “Horror Hotel”. She also starred in a western with “Audie Murphy” in “Seven Ways From Sundown”. On 24 May their 6-month active duty stint ended. Also in May Don releases a solo instrumental single under the pseudonym of “Adrian Kimberly” on “Calliope” records titled “Pomp & Circumstance” backed by “Black Mountain Stomp”. In October they began a UK Tour but on the 16th of October Don collapses on stage while performing at the “London Prince Of Wales Theater” during rehearsal. After being hospitalized locally he is flown back to the Sates for additional medical treatment and rest. Phil continues the tour with their backup guitarist “Joey Page” who also sings along with Phil. In December they release their only holiday album ever titled “Christmas With The Everly Brothers And The Boys Town Choir” which is a album of traditional favorites.

On 29 September 1963 they begin a new UK Tour with “Bo Diddley”, “Little Richard” and “The Rolling Stones”. They appear on the very first show of the new ABC Television series “Shindig” on 16 September 1964. In June 1965 their song titled “The Price Of Love” peaks at #2 on the UK singles charts but fails to reach the US Top 200 singles charts. On 8 October they begin a short 18-day tour of the UK with “Cilla Black” and “Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas”. In November they appear on “Ready, Steady Go!” and “Top of The Pops” in the UK. On 27 October 1968 they appear on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” on CBS TV. In 1969 they appear on variety shows “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” on CBS, “The Johnny Cash Show” on ABC and “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” on CBS.

They record their very first live album titled “The Everly Brothers Show” on 6 February 1970. It is a double album and is recorded at the “Grand Hotel” in Anaheim, California. On the 8th of July they begin their own weekly Musical Variety show of the same name on ABC. It is supposed to be a 11 week summer replacement series for “The Johnny Cash Show” with the final show appearing on the 10th of September. In August the “Barnaby” record label owned by singer “Andy Williams” releases a 20 song double album of 60’s songs titled “The Everly Brothers’ Original Greatest Hits”. In October “CBS” records releases “Original Greatest Hits” that peaks at #7 in the UK. In November Don releases his very first solo single “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” backed with “Only Me”. In December he releases his first solo album titled “Don Everly”. Both the album and single are released on a new label titled “Ode” records. He will release one more solo single and one more solo album on “Ode” records in 1974 before signing with the “Hickory” record label which is a subsidiary of “ABC” records.

In June 1972 the brothers sign a new contract with “RCA” records and their first single is “Ridin’ High” backed by “Stories We Could Tell” and their first album was titled “Stories We Could Tell”. The album also includes back up singing by “John Sebastian” of “The Lovin’ Spoonful”, “Graham Nash”, “David Crosby”, “Delaney Bramlett” and “Bonnie Bramlett” of “Delaney, Bonnie and Friends”. In June their final album together on “RCA” records is released titled “Star Spangled Spinger”. It is produced by “Duane Eddy” who had 28 Top 100 Hits of his own between 1958 and 1986 the biggest of which was “Because They’re Young” that peaked at #4 on 23 May 1960. On 14 July 1973 during a live performance at the “John Wayne Theater” at “Knott’s Berry Farm” in Hollywood, California, Entertainment Manager “Bill Hollinghead” stops the show. He is not happy with Don’s performance and Phil gets very upset as he smashes his guitar on the stage and storms off. It is a culmination of a long personal conflict the brothers have been having and Don announces to the crowd that they are officially breaking up. He states “The Everly Brothers Died Ten Years Ago”.

In September 1973 Phil signed a solo recording deal with “RCA” records. He releases one single on “RCA” records in September titled “God Bless Older Ladies (For They Made Rock & Roll” backed by “Sweet Grass Country”. In August 1974 Don’s final solo album on “Ode” records titled “Sunset Towers” is released. In December Phil signs with a UK label titled “Pye” records and releases 3 singles and 2 albums on that label. In December he released “Old Kentucky River” backed by “Summershine”. The following year he released “New Old Song” backed by “Better Than Now” followed up by the single “Words In Your Eyes” backed by “Back When The Bands Played In Ragtime”. His 2 solo albums on “Pye” records were “Phil’s Diner” in December 1974 and “Mystic Lane” in November 1975.

On 3 April 1976 a TV advertised album in the UK of their greatest hits titled “Walk Right Back With The Everlys” peaked at #10 in the UK. On 10 February 1977 Don begins to record his newest solo album titled “Brother Juke Box”. It is released on the “Hickory” records label in the US and on the “DJM” records label in the UK. On 10 April Don’s biggest selling solo single titled “Yesterday Just Passed My Way Again” peaked at #50 on the US Country charts. He would have only 2 other Top 100 solo singles and both only on the Country Charts in 1977. On 7 May a second Everly Brothers UK TV advertised greatest hits titled “Living Legends” peaks at #12 on the UK charts. Phil has his first solo Top 100 song in “Dare To Dream Again” that peaked at #63 on the Country singles charts on 27 December 1980. He would only have 2 other Top 100 solo singles as well and they both were also only on the Country charts, one in 1981 and one in 1983. The biggest of his 3 Top 100 solo hits was his last titled “Who’s Gonna Keep Me Warm” that peaked at #37 on 19 February 1983.

In March 1983 Phil records a duet with England’s “Cliff Richard” titled “She Means Nothing To Me” that also features “Mark Knopfler” of “Dire Straits” on guitar. The song peaked at #9 on the UK singles charts but does not chart in the US. “Dire Straits had 7 Top 100 US singles the biggest being “Money For Nothing” that peaked at #1 for 3 weeks on 13 July 1985.
On 30 June 1983 after almost 10 years the brothers decide to finally settle their differences and announce plans for a reunion concert in September. Phil is quoted as saying “We Settled In A Family Kind Of Way, A Big Hug Did It”. On 23 September their concert reunion is a great success and a sellout. It is held at the “Royal Albert Hall” in London, England and is recorded for later airing on TV and also is released years later on video.

Their first release after reuniting is a live double Album in January 1984 titled “The Everly Brothers Reunion Concert”. It peaks in the UK on the album charts at #47 in January and only peaks at #162 on the US album charts in March. They sign a new contract with “Mercury” records and their first release on their new label titled “On The Wings Of A Nightingale” peaks at #50 on the US POP singles charts on 1 September and would be their last Top 100 POP singles hit in the US. The song is produced by “Dave Edmunds” and written by “Paul McCartney”. It peaks at #49 on the US Country singles charts on 29 September and peaks at #4 on 13 October in the UK. Their last Top 40 Album in the US would be “EB 84” on “Mercury” records that peaked at #38 on 27 October.

On 23 January 1986 they are inducted into the “Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame”. They get their own star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater located at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard. On Don’s 50 Birthday on 1 February 1987 his brother Phil presents him with a custom-built guitar made from mother-of-pearl inlaid African blackwood and a pound of gold. In their home state of Kentucky in August 1988 a granite statue of the brothers is unveiled at the City Hall in Central City. On 25 February 1989 they would have their final Top 100 US single hit with “Ballad Of A Teenage Queen” with backing vocals from “Johnny Cash” and his wife “June Carter Cash” that peaks at #45 on the US Country charts. Johnny Cash had originally released this song in late 1957 and it peaked at #1 on the US Country singles charts on 20 January 1958 where it stayed for 10 consecutive weeks. It also crossed over to the POP singles charts for him and peaked at #14 on 3 February 1958. In May 1989 they record an old “Beach Boys” hit titled “Don’t Worry Baby” that is featured in the Movie “Tequila Sunrise” starring “Mel Gibson”, “Kurt Russell” and “Michelle Pfeiffer”. “The Beach Boys” also provide vocals as well as play their own instruments on this new updated version. This version is never released as a single but the original version by “The Beach Boys” peaked at #24 on 30 May 1964.

On 27 April 1990 Don & Venetia’s daughter Erin married “Axl Rose” the lead singer of “Guns N’ Roses” at Cupid’s Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The group “Guns N’ Roses” had 12 Top 100 singles from 1988 to 1995 the biggest of which was their first hit that peaked at #1 for 2 weeks on 25 June 1988 titled “Sweet Child O’ Mine”. SOME SONG LYRICS

ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I’m dreamin’ my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I’m dreamin’ my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

BIRD DOG
Johnny is a joker [he’s a bird)]
A very funny joker [he’s a bird]
But when he jokes my honey [he’s a dog]
His jokin’ ain’t so funny [what a dog]
Johnny is a joker that’s a’tryin’ to steal my honey [he’s a bird dog]

Johnny sings a love song [like a bird]
He sings the sweetest love song [ya ever heard]
But when he sings to my gal [what a howl]
To me he’s just a wolf dog [on the prowl]
Johnny wants to fly away and puppy-love my baby [he’s a bird dog]

Hey, bird dog get away from my quail
Hey, bird dog you’re on the wrong trail
Bird dog you better leave my lovey-dove alone
Hey, bird dog get away from my chick
Hey, bird dog you better get away quick
Bird dog you better find a chicken little of your own

Johnny kissed the teacher [he’s a bird]
He tiptoed up to reach her [he’s a bird]
Well he’s the teacher’s pet now [he’s a dog]
What he wants he’s been gettin’ now [what a dog]
He even made the teacher let him sit next to my baby [he’s a bird dog]

BYE BYE LOVE

WAKE UP LITTLE SUSIE
Wake up, little Susie, wake up
Wake up, little Susie, wake up
We’ve both been sound asleep, wake up, little Susie, and weep
The movie’s over, it’s four o’clock, and we’re in trouble deep
Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie, well

Whatta we gonna tell your mama
Whatta we gonna tell your pa
Whatta we gonna tell our friends when they say “ooh-la-la”
Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie, well

I told your mama that you’d be in by ten
Well Susie baby looks like we goofed again
Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie, we gotta go home

Wake up, little Susie, wake up
Wake up, little Susie, wake up
The movie wasn’t so hot, it didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked, our reputation is shot
Wake up little Susie
Wake up little Susie, well

JAG’S FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Everly Brothers’ music was amiable, exuberant, good-natured, happy, innocent, joyous, poignant, rollicking and romantic. You could find their music listed in Country, Country-Rock, Easy Listening, Folk-Rock, Pop, Rock, Rockabilly and in the Rhythm & Blues categories. Their music never had any hidden meanings and never dealt with drugs, violence nor did they ever utter a vulgar verse. You could say their music was rated “G” for all ages. Fun to listen to anytime, any place doing anything. The album above that I have on CD is the only Album/CD I ever owned by them even though I did own most of their first 20 singles at one time. My favorites by them are “All I Have To Do Is Dream”, “Bird Dog”, “Wake Up Little Susie” and “Bye Bye Love”. Up next in my History of Rock ‘N Roll Music will be my first artist for the letter “F” in Teen Idol “Fabian”.
