I have been a Blockbuster Online customer for over 2 years and have been consistently happy with the service I receive, the selection of movies available, and now with the ability to return online rentals to my local store I'm watching more movies than ever.
Blockbusters service is comparable to Netflix as far as pricing goes - both offer a standard package of 3 movies out at a time for $17.99, both have a huge selection of over 65,000 titles, both offer a "que" (basically a list of the movies you want to rent), both have easy to use websites (Blockbuster recently revamped theirs and you now have the ability to drag and drop movies into your que), and they both allow you to rate movies you've seen which allows them to make recommendations based on your rental history.
Where Blockbuster tends to stand apart is they also offer you the option of bringing your online rentals back to any of their stores and exchanging them for movie rentals from the store (obviously in-store rentals are subject to return dates). This has been great for me as I'm now able to watch about twice as many movies. I also benefit because movies that are typically designated as "long wait" online I'm almost always able to just pick up from the store when I swap the movies out. Blockbuster also gives you a coupon every month good for an additional free rental in-store that can be used for movies or games. I almost always rent a game and this saves me an additional $8.
In the two years I've had the service I've only encountered problems with the disc being broken or not receiving the disc maybe 3-4 times out of almost 400 rentals. When a problem does come up you simply use an automated process to inform them of the issue, they take the rental out of your que and will either ship the same movie, or the next movie in your que..whatever you decide.
I would agree with previous reviews and say that using the email function to contact customer service will for the most part result in you receiving a generic response to the problem (these responses come from the help section and may be automated). In the event you do have an issue and you want to save yourself some time check out the help section first to see if you can answer your own question and if not just bypass the email option and call customer service directly: toll free - 866-692-2789 .
A tip on receiving the movies you want..This takes a little upkeep on your part, takes me approximately 15-20 minutes a week. You want to keep at least 40-50 titles in your que (I usually have around 200) and make sure that the top 20-25 are ones that say "available now". Using this method I have never experienced a delay in receiving movies and I'm assured that when my movies have been checked in by their system the movies in my que go out immediately. The 15-20 minutes is usually spent putting movies that are "releasing this week" or are "new to dvd" into my que and then arranging my que so that the available now stuff is at the top. You can even put movies in your que that are still in theaters, cuts down on spending time looking for it to show up on the new release list.
In any case Blockbuster offers a 2 week free trial on their website or if you go into a Blockbuster store it may be a free month (not sure). Definitely worth trying out and even if you don't like it...hey it's a free month of movies!
