hmm, i still think you can. put the 6 in the cell, and then put the 5-2 under it on another 6, free the ace. You can do this twice at least, and at this time, you should have freed up enough room to clear all the 1's throuhg 6's. , and the rest should be easy.
(you may have to do two of these 5-2 columns at once, to make sure the colors work, but it should be easy, givne the 4 cells.)
and there's nothing wrong with a situation being improbable. the interesting problem is proving whether every game is or is not soluble. and it still seems indeterminate. I bet doing a google search would yield some interesting analysis. maybe i'll do that later.

Well maybe this is too improbable of a setup, but what if you got the cards all in reverse order than you want with Kings at the bottom in reverse up to sevens, and then 4 columns of sixs up to Aces. I don't think you could remove all the rows, ever.
Deep down, I hope I didn't just convince myself that there are some impossible patterns so that I would feel better when I can't do a set after repeated attempts.

freecell rocks (Reply to this comment)

I was curious, and a bit skeptical, as to your assertion that there were combinations where you couldn't win. I have had my periods where I played this game extensively, and always took for granted that you could win every game, but now that I ponder...
Hmm, I still can't think of any examples. If you could describe one, I would be very interested.

Good Explanation. (Reply to this comment)

And a good review.
At one time I had the key that you could use so you wouldn't be charged with a loss, and I lost it somewhere between computers.
It was like you'd use ctrl-? and you'd be given the opportunity to restart or end without penalty. ha ha.
Oh, well. I'm not really a cheater. Love this game but I have gone on to other solitaire games that seem more challenging to me.
Thanks,
Lorace

This game DOES rock! (Reply to this comment)

I had 600+ games logged at one point (a friend deleted my record) and I was over 70% successful. Your opinion is very thorough, and explains the concepts behind the game well. Bravo!
