The Bottom Line The Group of Abba consisted of “Benny Andersson”, “Bjorn Ulvaeus”, Agnetha Faltskog” and “Frida Lyngstad”

The group called Abba formed in Sweden and consisted of 2 male and 2 female members that were all great singers and took turns on lead on different songs. “Anni-Frid Lyngstad” who went by the nickname of Frida and was born on 15 November 1945 in Nervik, Norway. “Benny Andersson” was born “Goran Bror Benny Andersson” on 16 December 1946 in Stockholm, Sweden. “Bjorn Ulvaeus” was born on 25 April 1945 in Gothenburg, Sweden. “Agnetha Faltskog” was born on 5 April 1950 in Jonkoping, Sweden. The group got their name from the first letter of each member’s name. Benny was previously with the group called “The Hep Stars” who sold more records in Sweden then did “The Beatles”. Bjorn had previously formed his own folk band called “The West Bay Singers” in 1963. Benny met Bjorn at a friend’s party in 1966 in Vastervik, Sweden and began great friends. They decide to form a songwriting partnership including forming a publishing company titled “Union Songs”. They form a singing duo as well called “The Hootenanny Singers” and move to Stockholm, Sweden and are the first to sign a recording contract to a new company called “Polar” records.

While performing on a Swedish TV show Bjorn meets Agnetha for the first time who was recording for the Swedish branch of “CBS” records since the age of 17. She had one #1 hit in Sweden titled “I Was So In Love”. Frida was brought up by her Grandmother because it was thought her German Father had been killed when his ship sank at sea during Word War II and whose Mother dies shortly thereafter. At the age of 10 she entered a local amateur singing contest and at the age of 11 sang at a “Red Cross” soiree before forming her own dance band in 1964 called the “Anni-Frid Four”. They performed on TV in Sweden and won a talent contest on 3 September 1967 on the show “Hyland’s Corner” which lead to a recording contract with “EMI” records. Benny meets Frida in 1968 and by 1969 they are living together as well as Bjorn and Agnetha are also living with each other. In 1971 Agnetha began playing the part of “Maria Magdalena in the Swedish production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. She released her own solo version of “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” that was a big hit in Sweden.

On 1 November 1970 Agnetha and Frida record back up vocals for Benny’s single “Her Old Man” and also for several songs on Bjorn’s album “Happiness”. They decide that they would start performing together as a group so they would be able to see each other more often. They first appear as a group with the name “The Festfolk Quartet” performing at a local restaurant in Gothenburg, Sweden. The local newspaper “The Expressen” gives them rave reviews and states “A fast moving and variated entertainment with some very neat libretto here and there.” It goes on to say “The Festfolk Quartet are as well matched on stage as they are off it”. In May 1971 the four begin a tour of Sweden and Swedish folk venues. On 7 July Agnetha and Bjorn marry in Verum, Sweden while Benny plays the organ at their wedding. It is recorded and released in English, German, Spanish, and Swedish versions. Benny begins calling the foursome “ABBA” which are the first initials of each member’s first name. He finds out too late that ABBA is also the name of the largest Fish canning Company in Sweden but is able to successfully negotiate the use of the name. SOME SONG LYRICS

CHIQUITITA
Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong
You're enchained by your own sorrow
In your eyes
There is no hope for tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see
That you're oh so sad, so quiet

Chiquitita, tell me the truth
I'm a shoulder you can cry on
Your best friend
I'm the one you must rely on
You were always sure of yourself
Now I see
You've broken a feather
(how it hurts to see you cry and how it hurts to see you sad)
I hope
We can patch it up together

Chiquitita
You and I know
How the heartaches come and they go
And the scars they're leavin'
You'll be dancin' once again
And the pain will end
You will have no time for grievin'

DANCING QUEEN
Aaaaaa ha haaaaa ha ha ha ha-aa-aa
You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
See that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music
Everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet
Only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
See that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

FERNANDO
Can you hear the drums, Fernando?
I remember long ago
Another starry night like this
In the firelight, Fernando
You were humming to yourself
And softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar

They were closer now, Fernando
Every hour, every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid, Fernando
We were young and full of life
And none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

HONEY, HONEY
Honey honey, how you thrill me, a-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, nearly kill me, a-ha, honey honey
I'd heard about you before
I wanted to know some more
And now I know what they mean, you're a love machine
Oh, you make me dizzy
Honey honey, let me feel it, a-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, don't conceal it, a-ha, honey honey
The way that you kiss good night
The way that you hold me tight
I feel like I wanna sing when you do your thing
I don't wanna hurt you baby, I don't wanna see you cry
So stay on the ground girl, you better not get too high
But I'm gonna stick to you boy, you'll never get rid of me
There's no other place in this world where I rather would be
Honey honey, touch me baby, a-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, hold me baby, a-ha, honey honey
You look like a movie star (look like a movie star)
But I know just who you are (I wonder just who you are)
And honey, to say the least, you're a doggone beast
S.O.S.
Where are those happy days?
They seem so hard to find
I try to reach for you
But you have closed your mind
Whatever happened to our love?
I wish I understood
It used to be so nice
It used to be so good
So when you're near me
Darling can't you hear me?
S.O.S
The love you gave me
Nothing else can save me
S.O.S
When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?
You seem so far away
Though you are standing near
You made me feel alive
But something died I fear
I really tried to make it out
I wish I understood
What happened to our love
It used to be so good
WATERLOO
My my
At Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah
And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
My my
I tried to hold you back, but you were stronger
Oh yeah
And now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
So how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
JAG’S FINAL THOUGHTS:

This is one Great group and one Outstanding CD. I have only heard a few CD’s that had more Great songs on them then this one does and most of them are by “The Beatles”. Their music was carefree, celebratory, cheerful, confident, elegant, energetic, fun, happy, refined, romantic, sophisticated and stylish. This group is my favorite not to come from the US or England. I can listen to their music over and over and over and never get tierd of it. All the songs by them are very energetic, easy to tap your feet to or to sing along with. No drugs, no booze, no sex, no guns, no violence, no bad language and no innuendoes or bad overtones anywhere to be found. Great listening for all ages and differently rated G. I cannot say enough great things about this spectacular group or their wonderful music. As always I wish to thank everyone for coming by and reading my review and I hope you have a Wonderful and Safe Weekend and God Bless You All, Ron.
