The Bottom Line Why pay?
Why would you pay for something you can get free? News is plentiful in many forms. The only news sources that I know of that charge for access on the internet are magazines and academic journals. I don't suspect that many people would pay for a service that is available for free on TV and radio or low cost (newspaper). There are also many news sources on the internet for free also. There aren't many pros, but a whole lot of cons. Or at least that's what I thought. Here is some information to ponder. Some people think that paying for news is not only reasonable but will become the standard in a few years. A story published on ZDNet UK's website about Factiva, says that, "...valuable information has a price..." and basically says that consumers should expect to pay for it. A study be Juniper Research said that 41% of internet users would not pay for internet news, this is down from 47% a year earlier. That is still a lot of people that won't pay for news. But is does say something about the quality of our current news sources. The biggest thing is that consumers want better information, more meaningful content, and they are willing to pay for it. If a newspaper charges for online access these are some features I think should be available: - New/No banner ads - Highly customizable content - More international perspective - Less story repetition - More story depth Top 5: Sites that people visit for paid web content... 1) Yahoo! (yahoo.com) 2) Match.com (match.com) 3) Real (real.com) 4) Classmates (classmates.com) 5) WSJ (wsj.com) Final Say: Suprisingly, this is a fairly large issue. Most of the debate has blown over (from the public view) but it is still raging behind the scenes. For me to lay down some dough for a news service, it have to be truly amazing. I do not forsee anything coming out that would compell me to pay for news in the near future. Thanks! |
