Impertinent Thoughts on Pertinent Subjects XXVII

The Bottom Line It's that time of the month again...

Off we go...

He was a sk8er boi...

Winner of the most ridiculous news item since our last installment is the optioning by a movie studio to Avril Lavigne's song of teenage love, Sk8er Boi, in order to make a full length movie based on the song. One movie exec is saying it will be "Grease for a new generation." Gag me. I hope this bombs, almost as much as I hoped The Real Cancun would bomb (which it did).

Crackerman...more like crackerhead

Stupid Scott Weiland. Not long after it was made public that he had won the lead singer spot for the former members of Guns N Roses, sans Axl obviosuly, he gets arrested AGAIN on drug charges. What an a*s. I have no sympathy for him at ALL. Some people never learn I guess...

Here's one reason to buy St Anger...

Metallica's new album will come with a digital code to access live recordings, b-sides and rarities at metallicavault.com. This of course means I'll buy the album, review it on here, register on that site with my code, and immediately sell the disc at cost or just below cost shortly after this. The first single is TERRIBLE, it's sounds disjointed and unfinished, almost like the band jammed and James threw in some lyrics.

Awww boo hoo...no more Goo

Goo Goo Dolls lead singer Johnny Rzeznik made many fans nervous when he mentioned doing another record and another tour, "but after that, who knows?" Yeah, THAT would be a big loss, the Goo Goo Dolls...I don't know HOW I'd sleep at night knowing the Goo Goo Dolls broke up.

Hookah Brown...we hardly knew ye

Rich Robinson's new band broke up recently, due to "personal and business issues we were unable to overcome," whatever the hell that means. The only GOOD news that could come from this is that maybe just maybe his brother will dump Yoko Ono, hook back up with Rich, beg Steve to get back, and The Black Crowes can make a triumphant return.

Staind...they won't last long

OK, so they debuted at #1, but their first week sales (221,000 copies), had to have been disappointing for their label. Their first single hasn't made much of a dent at radio or MTV/MTV2, and they've already got a second single in the can and ready to go. Normally, we'd be seeing their first single still in the top 3 if it was making a dent, especially only two weeks after the album came out. They won't do better than platinum, unless something blows up out of nowhere.

Sigh...I knew it was too good to last

The new Pink song from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack absolutely blows. It is TERRIBLE, and it hurts my ears to listen to almost as much as Get the Party Started did. Blech. Hopefully the stuff on her upcoming album is a LOT better.

Pantera...Rest in Peace?

Maybe, and it sounds that way the band members are talking. They're taking the Black Crowes route ("if we feel like doing Pantera again..."), but one wonders how realistic it is. Tis a shame, Pantera was a great metal band who wrote one of the pre-eminent power ballads of all time (This Love).

Epic Records...Not a Good Month

First Ozzy left (he took his daughter with him, but who cares about her whiny a*s anyways?), and now, Pearl Jam has said buh bye to their record label of 12 years. The band is said to be taking their time and exploring all their options. The second leg of their tour kicked off earlier this week (Bushleaguer made a triumphant return to the setlists), the long delayed rarities album is almost guaranteed to see the light of day in August, and there's talk of a new album and more touring (US, Europe) NEXT year. Meanwhile, Epic has lost two of their most solid selling artists (both of them go either gold or platinum with every release) and don't really have any highly talented acts to take their places (unless you consider Good Charlotte to be highly talented).

Yay, a break from Ja Rule!

According to his thug record label president, Irv Gotti, we won't be hearing anything more from Ja Rule until sometime next year. Of course, he's then going to release a double album (at least according to Gotti), but I guess all good things have catches to them.

Boo to Relaxed Ownership Limits

Since Clear Channel became a major player in the mid 90s, concert ticket prices have risen 60%. Now, with relaxed ownership limits on TV, radio and other media outlets, I'm sure we're going to continue to see the SAME artists who have marginal talent at best stuffed down our throats because heaven forbid, they find someone who they'll let DEVELOP into a superstar. The RIAA is a joke, CC is a joke, and so is this decision. I hope all you guys like what you've been force fed the past couple of years, you're about to get another heaping dose of it.

Wow...

I don't care if you like Led Zeppelin or not, this article is a MUST READ. It talks about technology and the effect it's had on live performance. It is an excellent piece of music writing. http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/music/top/documents/02914437.htm

And when you're done checking out that link, check out this parody of Slim Shady, aka Eminem. http://crew.tweakers.net/JvS/zooi/realhussein.swf
Funny funny stuff. It's good to see Eminem had no say in whether a video was made of this parody.

The Latest Trend

Sorry, but some of these bands who are breaking big do nothing for me. AFI? Blech. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's? Blech. Maybe I'm becoming everything I said I wouldn't, but there's very few NEW bands coming out with anything to say, or with anything worth giving much of a listen to.

Jane's is back baby

Jane's Addiction is back on July 21st with a new album (as well as headlining the returning Lollapalooza tour). But methinks it might not live up to the hype, as the first single is only being given to radio a week before the disc's release. Very odd, and usually not a good sign. We'll wait and see though.

Less Than Jake fans rejoice!

The band plans to release not one but two EP's by the end of the year, songs that did not make their new Anthem disc but were recorded at the same sessions. This is definitely good news, Anthem is a solid effort, and it's been getting a TON of spins in my car.

"It's just a very raw rock n roll..."

That's how the Edge of U2 describes the songs the band has written so far for their next album, due probably in the first quarter of next year. This can only be good news, and hopefully the band decides to do arenas (or amphitheatres) on their tour supporting it. Stadium shows suck, whether it's U2, the Stones, or whoever else.

Smile...no really

Brian Wilson is going to perform his lost masterpiece Smile in it's entirety at a series of concerts in the UK in February of next year. Man oh man, hopefully the tapers are out in full force for that.

That's it for now, I'll be back soon enough with another installment, same Matty time, same Matty channel...
