We recently acquired a fish. No not a fancy fish, a $2.98 fish in a cup. yes, it's a BETA.
He came in a cup, about the size of a rocks glass. Confined, depressed, and not exactly ready for a new environment I wanted to do everything within my power to make him as comfy as possible in an 8 cat, 1 dog household.
I bought a 5 gallon tank, some pretty plants (live ones), colorful rocks, a nicely decorated home, and some toys (wrecked ships, shells, etc.), a net, and food.
At first he didn't like the open space. He cringed at every movement that went by his tank. But within a few days he was swimming, jumping, and leaping out of the top of his tank and happy as a lark to see me coming with the Beta food.
I've known many Betas in my lifetime, none of my own, but all of them lived in tiny plastic containers. Yes, they are a dime a dozen. Their life span is short but not unlike any other type of animal, vegetable, or mineral they need space to swim and be free. As close as you can get is to buy your Beta a tank and give him all the comforts he has never enjoyed being captive in a plastic rocks glass.
Maybe more people would be inclined to take on such a small responsibility (as caring for Betas) if they knew how active and fun they really were in an environment that truly made them happy.
Betas are not only gorgeous creatures but they are very entertaining. Mine greets me every morning at the top of his tank, flapping his fins wildly in high hopes of me talking to him and dropping a few flakes in his tank. After breakfast he swims in circles and comes to the top to give me fish kisses.
I hope that anyone who buys a Beta would consider spending the five extra dollars on a tank and forgo the plastic confinement........How would you like to live in a jar?
By the way-Beta, tank, decor, food and a net cost me all of fifteen dollars. Not bad huh for so much fun!
