The Bottom Line The original founding members of B.T.O. were “Randy Bachman”, “Robbie Bachman”, “Blair Thomas” and “C.F. Fred Turner”

This group was formed in 1972 in Winnipeg, Canada by the founding member and former lead singer of the group “The Guess Who”. The group started with the name of “Brave Belt” and also consisted of guitarist “Chad Allan” who had also been in “The Guess Who”, bassist “C.F. Fred Turner” and Randy’s brother and drummer “Robbie Bachman”. The group released 2 albums called “Brave Belt” and “Brave Belt II” and neither made the charts. After 2 years Chad left the group and was replaced by a 3rd brother “Tim Bachman”. They then decided to rename the group “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” based on the trucker’s magazine called “Overdrive”. In August 1973 after they had been rejected by 24 different record recording companies they are finally singed to “Mercury” records. They then released their debut self titled album “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” which peaks at #70 on the US album charts. Tim decides to leave the group and is replaced by “Blair Thornton” on guitar. On 1 December their first single “Blue Collar” peaked at #68 on the US charts.

On 23 February 1974 their next release “Let It Ride” peaks at #23 on the US singles charts. On 9 March their 2nd album titled “Bachman-Turner Overdrive II” peaked at #4 on the US album charts. This is followed by “Takin’ Care Of Business” that peaks at #12 on the US singles charts on 18 May. On 14 September “Not Fragile” peaks at #1 for 1 week on the US album charts. The very next week “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” peaks at #1 on the US singles charts for 1 week as does it’s flip side “Free Wheelin’”. Their next release “Roll On Down The Highway” peaks at #14 on the US singles charts on 18 January 1975. In March “Reprise” records re-releases “Brave Belt” now re-titled “Bachman-Turner Overdrive As Brave Belt” that peaks at #180 on the US album charts. On 17 May “Hey You” peaks at #21 on the US singles charts. “Four Wheel Drive” is their next release and it peaks at #5 on 7 June on the US album charts. On 6 December “Down To The Line” peaks at #43 on the US singles charts. They decide to shorten the group name from “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” to “B.T.O.”.

On 31 January 1976 “Head On” peaks at #23 on the US album charts. On 7 February “Take It Like A Man” with backing vocals from “Little Richard” peaks at #33 on the US singles charts. Their final Top 40 album titled “Best Of B.T.O. (So Far)” peaks at #19 on 11 September on the US album charts and is their first and only platinum selling album. The following week “Gimme Your Money Please” peaks at #70 on the US singles charts. On 20 October they begin a 29-date US tour that is scheduled to end on 29 February. In April 1977 Randy decides to leave the group to go solo and is replaced by “Jim Clench” formally of the group “April Wine”. Also in April “Freeways” peaked at #70 on the US album charts. Late in 1977 they released their next album called “BTO Japan Tour – Live” but it was not released worldwide. The rumors of this Live Album are unconfirmed, as it has been said that it was only released in Canada, Japan and a few European Countries and only shows up on a very few CD lists. In March 1978 their next album “Street Action” peaks at #130 on the album charts in the US. Randy releases his 1st solo album also in March titled “Survivor” but it fails to chart. On 24 April 1979 their final Top 100 single in the US “Heartaches” peaks at #60 on the charts. Also in April “Rock ‘N’ Roll Nights” peaks at #165 on the US album charts. The group decides to break up shortly after this.

In February 1979 Randy forms a new group called “Ironhorse” and they sign a contract to “Scotti Brothers” records. On 17 March Randy’s new group has “Sweet Lui-Louise” peak at #36 on the US singles charts. The following month their debut albut titled “Everything Is Grey” peaks at #60 on the US album charts for them. Their second and final Top 100 single in the US is “What’s Your Hurry Darlin’” that peaks at #89 on the US singles charts on 26 April 1980. The group decides to disband and Randy then forms “Union” that releases one album titled “On Strike” in 1981 but it fails to chart. Randy disbands the group and decides to go solo once again. In 1984 Randy decides to reform “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” as a trio with his brother Tim and Fred Turner. And in September their new debut album self-titled “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” peaks at #191 on the US album charts on their new label “Compleat” records. In August 1986 their next release is “Live! – Live! – Live!” on “Curb” records that fails to chart. In 1990 Robbie decides to form his version of the group called “B.T.O.” with Blair and Jim.

In 1992 both groups decided to tour independently of each other. Randy would also tour with his old reformed group “The Guess Who”. In October 1998 a group in England called “Bus Stop” releases a new version of “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” with vocals by Randy Bachman that peaks at #22 in the UK on the singles charts. Both groups would continue to tour until the end of 1997 before both would disband for the final time. SOME SONG LYRICS

HEY YOU
Hey you, you say you wanna change the world
It's alright, with me there's no regret
It's my turn, the circle game has brought me here
And I won't let down 'till every song is set

You realize now
You should have tried now, oooh
The music's gone now
You lost it somehow
Hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la
Wooo, sha la la

Hey you, you say the race is much too fast
It's okay, with me I'm keeping pace
It's my game, the music is inside my head
For every one on top there's one who can't retrace

You realize now
You should have tried now, oooh ooh
The music's gone now, you'll find out
You lost it somehow
Hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la la
Wooo, sha la la la

You realize now oooh
You could have died now, oooh
The music's gone now
You lost it somehow
Hey you, hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la
Wooo, sha la la

LET IT RIDE
Good Bye, Hard Life
Don't Cry Would you let it ride?
Don't Cry Would you let it ride?

You can't see the mornin', but I can see the light
Ride ride ride let it ride
While you've been out runnin' I've been waitin' half the night
Ride ride ride let it ride

And would you cry if I told you that I lied and would you say goodbye Or
would you let it ride? And would you cry if I told you that I lied and
would you say goodbye Or would you let it ride?

Babe my life is not complete I never see you smile
Ride ride ride let it ride
Baby you want the forgivin' kind and that's just not my style
Ride ride ride let it ride

I've been doin' things worthwhile, you've been bookin' time
Ride ride ride let it ride

LOOKIN’ OUT FOR #1
Ev'ry day is an endless train, you got to ride it to the end of the line,
be a troubleshooter, blow the bad luck away,
and you will make it to your station on time.
And you'll find out ev'ry trick in the book
and that there's only way to get things done
you'll find out the only way to the top is lookin' out for number one,
I mean you, keep looking out for number one.

Ev'ry night is a different game, we gotta work for our fortune and fame,
success is a ladder, take a step at a time,
and the people will remember you name.
Yes, I found out all the tricks of the trade,
and that there's only one way you're gonna get things done
I found out the only way to the top is lookin' out for number one,
and that's me, I'm looking out for number one.

Ev'ry day is an endless train, but I ride it to end of the line,
I'm a real troubleshooter, and I blow it away,
no one's gonna get what's mine,
I found out ev'ry trick in the book
and that there's only way to get things done
I found out the only way to the top is lookin' out for number one,
I mean you, keep looking out for number one.
And that's us; keep lookin' out for number one,
that's me; I'm looking out for number one.

ROLL ON DOWN THE HIGHWAY
We rented a truck and a semi to go
Travel down the long and winding road
Look on the map I think we've been here before,
Close the doors let's roll once more.

Cop on the corner, look he's startin' to write
I don't need no ticket so I screamed out of sight,
Drove so fast that my eyes can't see,
Look in the mirror is he still followin' me

Let it roll down the highway
Let it roll down the highway,
Roll, roll.

Look at the sign, we're in the wrong place
Come on boys, let's get ready to race
454 coming over the hill
The man on patrol, is going to give us a bill.

The time's real short, you know the distance is long
I'd rather have a jet but it's not in the song
Climb back in the cab, cross your fingers for luck
We gotta keep movie' if we're going to make a buck.

Let it roll down the highway,
Let it roll down the highway,
Roll

Let it roll
Let it roll
Let it roll
Let it roll down the highway,
Let it roll down the highway

TAKIN’ CARE OF BUSINESS
You get up every morning
>From your alarm clock's warning
Take the 8:15 into the city
There's a whistle up above
And people pushin', people shovin'
And the girls who try to look pretty

And if your train's on time
You can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed
Look at me I'm self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day

And I'll be...
Taking care of business every day
Taking care of business every way
I've been taking care of business, it's all mine
Taking care of business and working overtime
Work out!

If it were easy as fishin'
You could be a musician
If you could make sounds loud or mellow
Get a second-hand guitar
Chances are you'll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows

People see you having fun
Just a-lying in the sun
Tell them that you like it this way
It's the work that we avoid
And we're all self-employed
We love to work at nothing all day

YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET
I met a devil woman,
She took my heart away,
She said, I had it comin' to me,
But I wanted it that way.
I think that any love is good lovin', and
So I took what I could get mmh,
Oooh, oooh she looked at me with big brown eyes
And said:

You ain't seen nothin' yet,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet,
Here's something that you never gonna forget,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet.

And now I'm feelin' better,
'Cause I found out for sure.
She took me to her doctor
And he told me of a cure.
He said that any love is good love
So I took what I could get mmh,
Oooh, oooh she looked at me with big brown eyes
And said:

You ain't seen nothin' yet,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet,
Here's something that you never gonna forget,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet.

Any love is good love
So I took what I could get mmh,
Oooh, oooh she looked at me with big brown eyes
And said:

You ain't seen nothin' yet,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet,
Here's something that you never gonna forget,
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet.

JAG’S FINAL THOUGHTS:

Randy Bachman has a very distinctive voice and is a great singer. I enjoyed the group “Guess Who” and all their songs as well as most of the songs done by BTO. This is the only CD I own by BTO and even though I had most of their singles at one time in my record collection this CD was the only album by them I have ever owned. I would give this CD a PG rating based on today’s standards only. The CD itself is a great addition to anyone’s collection, especially if you like hard rocking, fast paced driving type music. This ends our lesson for today everyone and I hope you enjoyed this? Next up on my agenda in my History of Rock ‘N’ Roll is “The Bee Gees”.
