I Got So Mad, blah blah, Writeoff: Homeschooling with Grand Theft Auto III
by jkkelley | Jun 13 '03
My final recommendation on What Should I Know About Homeschooling is to use Grand Theft Auto III as a tool. What part of this did you not understand?

Brilliant assessment of public school vs homeschooling! The alternative is to score a child support agreement from someone wealthy enough to pay for the kid to go to one of those rare private schools where they teach Latin and Japanese and have nude models in the life drawing classes. But homeschooling is probably more reliable--IF you can get the kids to cooperate and come out of their rooms once in a while.

When he wasn't attending his astronomically expensive private school learning Japanese and fencing, my kid grew up locked behind his bedroom door playing computer games. When I wanted to speak to him, I had to send e-mail. I worried that his time spent battling in the panzer divisions would detract from his general growth and education. He would only come out long enough to go to Strategicon conventions, where he seemed to do really well re-fighting World War II with veterans of the actual event. I realized that there was some redeeming social value to his time thus spent when his high school history teacher let him teach the class for a week after he had pointed out just one too many of her errors on the topic of World War II. His hand-eye coordination learned from a misspent youth in video arcades and at his computer has saved him from more than a few dangerous encounters on the L.A. Freeways. I am still, however, waiting for him to rule the world and I have to say I'm a little impatient about that.

I've read this piece and although I currently teach in a public high school with the self-imposed motto "Burger Dell: Have It Your Way" (which refers to the way grades are manipulated/ changed by "administrators" etc.), I have decided to implement your advice by bringing my son's PS2 to school with me next year. I figure that once the seniors can pass any sort of guised "inept/ inaccurate IQ test graded by trained monkeys in a state department" based on GTA3, perhaps I can introduce my beloved GTA Vice City, which will inculcate a respect for diversity, 80's music and Miami drug lords.

No matter where I am, you manage to make me smile. :)

...I'm delighted that this review and game have your educated and professional sanction. Does it not say that creativity is the key to keeping youth's education fresh, relevant and exciting?

When are we going to lunch again? You were fun, and tolerant of freaks (since you didn't bail on me). It is not that hard for me to get up to Crackima.

Many amusing observations and brickbats. Thank you, all.

Dl - the state of education in Latin these days is deplorable. Thanks for giving me good reason to whack off in public about it a little.

beckytcy - I'm sure I wouldn't, actually, though I thank your for the vote of confidence.

munkus - wonderful, mate. Always glad for any points I can score, mystery or otherwise. Thank you for taking on this Gallipoli.

Risa - delighted that I had you laughing while Timbo, there, spent the whole trip playing Vice. Thank you for your additions in the esoterica area of vehicle appraisal, and you are correct. The other day I was driving a Perennial (which moves like a wounded water buffalo) from the docks when for some reason I incurred the distaste of the fine law enforcement officers. Shaking them was a serious bastard.

... but all the kids I knew who were home-schooled turned out to be freaks with no social skills. Maybe their parents were just uncool. I'm sure you'd do a better job.

Thanks for participating in the write-off! It had me laughing non-stop since I have had to spend the last 48 hours on a road trip to North. Cali with my husband and best guy friend who spent the whole time in the car playing GTA Vice City on the laptop. THE WHOLE TRIP. I have learned so much from this trip that I intend to use in real life. For instance, if I am ever driving a van, I will not be able to pick up any hookers. You did forget to mention that this wise game also teaches kid that any car called an Idaho or Manana, aka early Ford station wagons, are piece of sh*t cars that are not good for shaking the cops or running over lamp posts.

You are god!

...I subject me kids to the daily abuses of public schooling, it's clear to me that I still need to get this game! Who woulda thunk that kids could learn so much from this - ethics, respect for authority, etc.? What self-respecting parent would deny their kids this amazing learning opportunity? :)

Much appreciate all your kind words and ratings, whether I agree with them or not. Thanks to those who for whatever reason haven't taken me off the alert list yet.

Brian - if it isn't silly, I worked my butt off for an hour for nothing. As I finaled it, I thought, "This is easily the stupidest review since I ate all those Atkins Bars; probably as stupid as my review of Team Barbie Detective. Fortunately, people have come to expect this sort of thing from me." If she's even weirder than me, she must have been an interesting companion. Thanks for visiting.

Ms. K - always too kind, Ma'am. Yes, if you had homeschooled with it, there's no doubt they would have turned out differently!

Shannon - ah, so you are a fellow player! We are blood brother and sister in screaming, careening escapes from Trenton across the grass right past the cops' station with LC's finest in pursuit! I didn't get VC because I had just bought the PS2 and wasn't sure if I was going to like the concept yet. I thank you for your gushing, fine lady, and will loan you my bucket for the benefit of the carpet. I was out mowing today, trying to figure out how to deal with some grass problems, and honest to gods I was thinking about you: mild-mannered grass professional by day, biting necks by night. My kind of lady.

Freak - whatever parents do, I'll say this: if their kids play this, the folks need to have some input. The range of activities is staggering. I do think it carries one risk, which is that of driving habits. I find myself having to consciously remind myself: red lights are mandatory, not optional. No driving on the lawn, etc. As for my posting frequency, my hope is that it'll be a lot longer than three months. I've been disturbingly active here lately.

Mr. Grover - glad you enjoyed that. I was musing upon the increasing length of the abbreviation, and the mind-numbing pandering to every little quirk in the interests of inclusiveness, and I chose this one over: Anyone Who Had Ever Had the Slightest Gender Confusion or Same-Sex Attraction or Even Just Felt a Little Queer, or AWHEHSGCSSAEJFLQ. Consider the term my own small contribution to Gay Pride Week, or Month, or whatever commemoration it can fit into.

when i read the title i thought to myself "Hmph! This will be silly!". In fact, i still suspect it might be, the only trouble being that i find no specific bogus claims to argue with. The only qualm i have with your advice is that an ex-girlfriend of mine (whom i still get along with) was homeschooled without any video games at all, and she turned out even weirder than you. It'd be sad to have lost that. Wonderful write-up regardless.

... ahem, anyway. Long time no see, no write, no nuttin'. I always look forward to your rants, err, reads. This was spot on actually and it startles me a bit but then it's a full moon so I can explain it away. ;)

Need I say ... yet again ... brilliant? While I enjoy the cursing and pummeling a bit more in Vice City it doesn't hold a candle to GTA III in this context (but then again you know that).

I'm gonna get on up and skeedaddle before I gush too much and make a scene. Always a pleasure, J, always.

While some may choose to disagree with this editorial about homeschooling and GTA, I honestly think that this was well thought out, contained more than enough information and could even be posted in the video game section. I am a home schooler and damn proud of it. My kids are normal [well, eggheads] and do everything that other kids do - including playing video games. We don't have this title but if it is as detailed as you say, I might see if they are interested in it. We have Driver [sucked] and there really didn't seem to be a point to it - at least not to me.

I can see how some people might rate this Off Topic but as a home schooler I found it a great read - when was the last time a video game [entertainment level] taught some real world values like repercussions for actions? Most video games give you a few bleeps, deplete your lifeline a little and move on to the next scene. I can’t say that this would be practical as a head on learning tool – but something tells me that kids will be learning a little about life when playing this – even if they don’t realize it at the time.

So now what … another three months before you post another review?

I loved, loved, loved LGBTGDQBFFHCCRTMQ and I'm sending it and the translation to a pair of MQ's who have a TV show on Public Access. They are always adding letters on to LGBT . . .and maybe this will stop them, but it may spur them on!
