GAY DAYS In Orlando, FL : 4th Annual Gay Pride W/O

The Bottom Line Everyone is welcome to participate in celebration of Gay Days. Wearing "red" is the primary color, but, some people opt for wearing the "Mickey Mouse" Sombrero, for example, instead.
This is my first submission for the Fourth Annual Gay Pride Write-Off. This great Write-Off is co-hosted by: Psychovant; SurgRN911; & ed-grover.
Introduction
I had enjoyed working at Disney World in Orlando, Fl, during the years of 1988-1990. My primary work area was for Epcot Center. At times, I had overtime work available working in the Magic Kingdom. Anyway....
....I had heard, by word of mouth from my co-worker peers, of a new and upcoming Gay Days event to take place inside Disney during my last year of working there in 1990. This great event was to take place at the Magic Kingdom on the first Saturday of June. This captivated my interest.
I did work that first Saturday of June in 1990, but in Epcot. I was told by my peer co-workers, and also dear friends, that participants of this event will wear red & this is how I will be able to recognize. So, I kept an eye out this day. And, some red shirts visiting Magic Kingdom this day did go on to Epcot to end their day with "Illuminations" for a firework & classical music production. The red shirt crowd was very very small, mostly families and/or friends of 3 or 4. My opinion? No one really knew they were Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, or Bisexual. Simply because, it was too new. Lets say, it was a soft opening headed towards a great future!
I also took my family to the Magic Kingdom 2 years ago during this event. They were not aware of it, until I explained.
....What is Gay Days?
It really did begin at the Magic Kingdom in Disney as a first Saturday event of June, 1990. This was for a theme park event. But, a year later evolved into a weekend event with other attractions involved with dining & dancing. Now, it is a week long event with so much on the agenda to plan! Everyone participating is asked to wear red in support. This event always begins on the first Saturday of every June.
NOTE: The Gay Days celebration is not runned by Disney.
Gay Days gives everyone a chance to get together with a common interest & meet new friends. Participants include families, friends, and singles. There are many activities planned now for all interests in the agenda.
Our local papers & television here in Florida were not publicizing at first, but, after the years gone by, there was much more acceptance & much more publicizing & in good favor. Go figure? Sounds like the $$ hit the pockets just right. I am quite curious if anyone outside Florida has heard of Gay Days. Has it reached the news on television there, like here, yet?
This week long event now encompasses Pleasure Island, Water Parks of Disney, Hard Rock of Universal, happy hours at the current host hotel the "Royal Plaza", and more.

Gay Days, to this date, is for everyone! It is now more than ever so popular! All people are invited to attend. There is no discrimination here. Just one big happy celebration!
Current Host Hotel : The Royal Plaza
I have only fond memories of this high rise Royal Plaza Hotel which is located in Downtown Disney. It is an old haunt of mine & a favorite. This is where I met Run DMC at the Giraffe Lounge there back in the days & got their autograph. WOW! But, anyway...
Parking has always been an issue here. There is just not enough space when there is a full house. Especially for visitors & guests who are not staying there. There is no room for expansion either to resolve this problem.
But, if you do not have a car, within walking distance is Downtown Disney where many events take place for Gay Days concerning entertainment & partying. Disney's Pleasure Island Entertainment complex is also located there. Disney buses are also available for hotel pick up for transportation to the Disney theme parks. To other theme parks, like Universal or Sea World, would be a transfer available for a nominal charge, probably with the Mears Transportation Company, a local favorite.
Royal Plaza Hotel is also repeat host hotel for Gay Days. It is scheduled again for June, 2004. They must be doing something right! I believe it is because of the good service & treatment of past patrons.
