The Bottom Line My final recommendation is yet to be determined about this.

"Hello?"
"Hi, I am calling to try and clear up some things that trouble me. I believe that someone in your line of work could answer these questions. I can't overstate how important this is..."
"I am sorry. How can I help you?"
"Thank you. I cannot figure out what happened. Johnny became Sam? Did he change his name and relocate? This trips me up more than the metaphysical aspects of the movie. I have been on the internet, and NOBODY talks about it. Will you explain it to me?"
"I am very busy right now. I can check to see if a movie is in stock for you, if you need. I am not sure what you are asking me."
"It is very simple. How did Johnny become Sam?"

"I like Gary. He would do anything for anyone, not many people you can say that about. I would set him up with my sister if it wasn't for that obsession with that stupid movie..."
"Jesus! I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to explain the concept of actors playing characters to him. It is like my words fall into a black hole and fall out god knows where. I think he might be missing part of his brain. A small one, but one we all take for granted. It would make sense if he was retarded, but for someone with the knack he has for making money, it is almost inexcusable."
"It is like a reality show. Would you date a man who is smart, funny and wealthy, but consumed with a stupid movie and unable to comprehend the most basic facts about film?"
"He should pull a Memento, and get a "Johnny = Sam ??" tattoo on his chest."

A drip from my coffee cup onto the paper is a blessing. The blank page suddenly suggests a building in the shadows, or a hint of accusation in a face. It is all Tao, when you open to it. Similarly, a conversation overheard in line at a grocery store will open a door to a business in a good location with an owner struggling with a divorce and a motivationally-challenging pot habit, magically turning forty thousand into a fairly easy two hundred thousand. Good fortune swirling out of someone's misfortune. Yin and yang. The Tao, always there, always helping.

My drip ran a bit, swelling the paper gently. For a moment time froze, as I noticed the shape. It was a clay pot.

"Have you ever seen G. I. Jane? You should check that out. It might help you."
"Donna, I have told you more than once, I have only watched two movies in my whole life. Until I figure them out, I won't watch anything else. It isn't worth the hassle."

---

"THIS IS YOUR ANSWER. -ERIN"
The manila envelope bulged, blank except the crazily scrawled handwriting. I wasn't sure what to think. I didn't even know an Erin. I retrieved my latex gloves from the box labeled "Mail", possibly the only good thing to come out of the anthrax scare.

I sat down at the table, slowly peeling back the gummed lip. It was a videotape, titled "Black Dog".

-----

"Whatever happened to Gary? I haven't seen him in weeks?"
"Nobody really knows. The kid at the video store said he called him, crying desperately, and as far as I know, that is the last anyone heard from him."
"Weird."
