Lovely thoughts.... (Reply to this comment)

...and although I don't know your family, I do know that when many Dads say mushy stuff, a tear leaks from the corner of their eyes and their chest swells with pride. I suspect that woudl be the case here.
Thanks, Jude, for a lovely contribution.
Best,
George

..."the vision of you in my mind has always been one of soft lines and quite beauty!"
Hold that thought! I can't begin to tell you how wonderful that makes me feel.
I think your four girls are extremely lucky to have such a loving intelligent and sensitive father. Your integrity sets a standard for them that will last long after we are gone. And that, my friend, is something very special for the future of humanity as well.

But at some point it is supposed to stop, isn't it? Thanks though. I feel better. Jude

Jude,
It sounds like your relationship with your father was a lot like mine. Very touching, may both our troubled fathers rest in peace. Sheila

the Dad articles and poems and essays I have read this one really made me saddest and missing my father the most..Ours was a strange and viable relationship too and though he wasn't there for me for many years, when he was there it was with all his heart..Your poem is beautiful..thanks for sharing it

Being a Dad... (Reply to this comment)

How strange it is Ms. Jude Paxton, that the vision of you in my mind has always been one of soft lines and quite beauty! Perhaps it is in the words you write, or the images you post, that paint such a picture. In any case it has been a pleasure getting to know you through your words.
That being said, I am a father to four girls, and it is hard! I used to think that raising boys would be harder, but I was mistaken. But as hard as it is, and as hard as it gets, I love my girls uncontrollably.
Thank you Jude for sharing your story with us.

Your mother, who had the advantage of knowing your dad, already chimed in with almost exactly what i (in ignorance) was going to say. This was a very female sort of tribute, and we need more females willing to understand and give this sort of tribute. A lovely piece.
best,
- Brian

If your father can see this (and I believe he can) he will be very pleased - although if he were alive he would look at you and say - "Mushy stuff", and then he would fold it up neatly and leave in in the hidden pocket of his wallet where it would be found after his death. There are two side to every coin - and two sides to all of us.
