| Prepoia's Full Review: six 7 8th Magazine |
While shopping at my local grocery store and perusing the magazine titles (this small store has many titles that arent found elsewhere) I found one that seemed just right for my middle school classroom. The title is Six7*8th and those are the grades that I teach. I am always looking for appropriate magazines that students can read when they have time after they finish an assignment.
I must say that this magazine fit the bill. Although a bit young (in content) for my 8th graders, it is a great magazine for 6th and 7th graders. Even the 8th graders liked the fashions and some of the young Hollywood stars that were featured. I have not yet signed up for a classroom subscription (Im waiting to find a deal on the annual $19.95 subscription price which is for 6 issues). I will definitely do so for next year. I have also recommended it to the librarian so she can stock it for the library magazine selection.
In the HABITS section (those things that appear monthly) there are articles such as Oops & Ohs: LOL and ROLF which describes embarrassing moments that readers share. For any magazine to appeal to this age group, it must have a section such as this (although I do not understand the appeal, I do know that it is always a favorite section with the kids.) One of these moments includes one entitled, A Farting Gift. There are a least two pages devoted to this section each month.
Another is School Woes and in the Premier issue that I am using to write this review it was about five tips to help improve your report card.
Help! is a help solve your problem section written by a girl and guy, Brian & Jen. It covers problems with friends, girl/guy stuff, and parents and school problems. It has good solid advice given in appropriate language at the appropriate age level.
There are many articles that for adults may sound like just common sense, but when the audience are 10 to 13 year olds, are very helpful. In this issue there is an article about why young people shouldnt shoplift (entitled, The Finger Discount); why young people can get into trouble on websites like MySpace, Busted and signs that a person is being used by their friends. All of these topics are very helpful and appropriate for this age and are written in an understanding not judgmental writing style.
Other articles that this issue has (and is a good example of the next issue) is Not Your Typical Pageant Queen which profiles a pageant contestant who is an independent person and doesnt fit the stereotype of a contestant.
Another article that I enjoyed was A Million 2 One which is about a young girl who is a professional boxer. This is another example why I like this magazine. It does away with a lot of stereotypical boy/girl blather and actually introduces the notion that young women have choices and that they dont have to fit into stereotypical girl types when it comes to love and acceptance.
At least a quarter of the magazine is devoted to fashion and style. In many magazines with a teen audience, these styles are precocious and either too expensive for young girls or too provocative. In this magazine they show styles that are appropriate and inexpensive. Not only that but they are styles that I see young people wearing in school everyday. Really cute, sometimes funky, but real styles for real girls of this age group.
The makeup and hairstyles are great and the cosmetics are not overdone but are light and young looking. Most of the cosmetics and fashions are labeled on the page to tell you price and store where they can be purchased.
There is also a young Hollywood star featured each month with article and interview. The Premier issue had Taylor Dooley who talks about success and failure and how to handle each.
Throughout each issue there are many other short articles that deal with a variety of issues important to the Junior High/Middle School groups. I really like the way they ended this issue. The last page was called, Junior High 10 Commandments and list 10 fun things relating to Junior High and ways to make it a positive experience.
So if you have a young teen at your house, you may want to check this magazine out. My kids at school love looking at it and I recommend it!
