| mmcphee's Full Review: Reckitt & Colman 22 Oz Resolve Carpet Cleaner |
I am ready to turn my house over as a testing site for stain removal products. I have three built-in mess makers that are capable of making anything and everything dirty. One of my best battles has been the dining room chairs facing off against Resolve Triple Action Carpet Cleaner.
Meet Resolve
There are several different Resolve formulas. The Resolve Triple Action Carpet Cleaner comes in a 22 oz trigger spray bottle. To use simply spray on the stain, wait 5 minutes and rub it away with a clean damp cloth, rinsing as necessary to remove the cleaner and dirt. As with any stain remove you should test in an inconspicuous place before using to check for colorfastness.
White Upholstery with Children?
If memory serves we selected this dining room set while I was still pregnant with my oldest, some six years ago. It held up beautifully in our formal, but seldom used dining room. When we moved 6 months ago we had a choice, purchase a new kitchen table since our old one would not accommodate our family of 5 or use our dining room set. We (OK, I) decided we were going to use our dining room set despite protests from my husband about the chairs.
Keeping the Off-White Looking Nice
After about a month of using our dining room set for three meals a day, I began to regret my decision. The chairs my daughters used were dirty and stained. Then a couple of months later we moved out son from his highchair to a booster at the table. His chair looked even worse. We tried to protect the chairs with plastic covers, but we never found any that fit well. I finally gave up and started a Sunday night ritual of chair washing with Resolve.
My Experience
Weekly chair washing lasted, oh, about 2 weeks and has since been replaced with Once-a-Month-or-So chair scrubbing. That means stains can end up sitting for several weeks before I get around to cleaning them off. Fortunately Resolve doesn't seem to mind. I spray it on, wait 5 minutes or more and when I come back most of the stains are gone. For anything a little more stubborn I use a cloth diaper to work at the stain a little and this all that is usually needed for ketchup, tomato sauce and squished blueberries. If necessary I'll squirt on another round of Resolve and that generally takes care of everything. A good rub down with the barely damp diaper removes remaining cleaner and general dirt and I have nice clean chairs again.
The trigger spray bottle is easy to use. I love the steam and spray options. The spray is great for all over general cleaning while the stream lets me concentrate the cleaner right on stubborn stains. Both options let me aim the cleaner on the upholstery without overspray on the wooden chair frame like areoles spray cleaners tend to. The scent is highly perfumed and sweet, not at all chemically, although not exactly pleasant either. I suppose the perfume is there to cover up odors as well, but I can't say that any of our chairs smelled.
I clean at night and by morning the chairs are dry and the smell from the cleaner is gone. I have probably used Resolve Spot and Stain Remover at least 8 times on our chairs and so far there has been absolute no damage to the fabric or fading of the off-white color. I compared our daily use chairs to the ones carefully stored in the basement and I can't tell the difference in the seats.
I am not impressed with Resolve on our carpeting. Perhaps the stains are too tough or too old or too something else, but for spots on our tan carpet I prefer Spot Shot, which seems to work magic. It may be something as simple as the aerosol formula working better on the long carpet fibers than the smooth fabric of our chairs.
Final Thoughts
I used to try and get away with using the fewest amount of cleaners as possible. I've given up on the dream of using one product to clean everything. So far I have not found anything that works better on food stains on our upholstered dining chairs. Even though this is all it does, Resolve Spot and Stain Remover has a permanent spot on my cleaning product shelf.
