Pros: Great way to learn technical elements of professional skating.
Cons: Sends unrealistic message to those who've never been on a skateboard.
The Bottom Line: Skating enthusiasts might feel like this game is selling out, but will otherwise enjoy it.

| Shecket's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 |
Journey to the underground world of abandoned air hangars and vacant schoolyards. A world of ollies, benihanas, and fakies. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is an interesting shift from your average sports video game. But of course, skating is quite a shift from your average sport.
The genius in this game is in it's departure from reality. I do not watch the X-games, but I would venture to guess that the competition entails skating for a couple minutes on a ramp, and then receiving scores from a few guys in tuxes sitting at a scorer's table. That would not be a very fun video game.
Instead, Career mode challenges you to earn money by completing a check list on each level. With the money you earn, you can improve your skills or equipment, and unlock future levels based on your lifetime earnings.
The player creation feature allows you to create your skating alter-ego. You might not want to input your real weight, because the avatars in this game are quite true to form. My character looks like, well, an overweight skater!
Eventually, you will reach a point where you are unable to take the next step in career mode. You may opt to enter in cheat codes, in order to unlock future levels, or, you might do what I did and put this game back on the shelf.
This game held my attention for about two weeks of frequent play. I wouldn't mind a tour mode, but the arcade elements were pretty fun as well.
