Hair Coloring Products

The Bottom Line There are certain precautions to take before coloring your hair.

There comes a time in every woman's life when she is dissatisfied with her hair. Whether it be the texture, the color or the length, we women will go to extensive lengths to try to change it to our liking. When you are positive you want to color your hair, you have be very careful with certain aspects of it. Below is a list to consider when coloring hair:

1. How Damaged is My Hair?
You never want to color hair that is extremely damaged. If it's only the ends, you should get a hair cut immediately before or immediately after coloring your hair. Also, take into consideration how often you heat style. You should heat style as little as possible, as coloring and heat styling is enough damaging on their own. To help prevent damage after coloring, buy a coloring brand that comes with a deep conditioning after treatment.

2. What Level is Right For Me?
You can see on the side of the box of any given hair color what level it is. Level 1 is temporary and lasts only 10-12 washes. Level 2 is semi-permanent and lasts between 24-28 washes, and Level 3 is permanent and generally has to grow out. For first time colorers, I suggest using a semi-permanent. That way, if you think your hair color is atrocious, it won't last nearly as long as the permanent. If you like the color, then the next time it would be apropriate to use a permanent. Semi-permanent is also better to use if you are doing a drastic color change (i.e. dying your hair from any color to blonde)because there are no visible roots. Your hair just slowly fades for a month or two. Permanent hair color is usually best to use when you either don't care about how your roots look and you just want your color to stay how it is, or when your roots aren't easily visible. When using a level 3 hair dye, remember not all of them last as long as they're supposed to so a lot of the time you have to try a few different brands to find the one that works best for you. Also, remember that permanent is more damaging then semi-permanent

3. How Can I Be Sure I get the Results I want?
You have to be very careful when choosing a hair color based on your natural hair color. For Example: If you have naturally blonde hair and you want to dye it jet black, it probably won't end up that color. Based on the undertones of the color, it could turn blue or purple. You should either see a stylist or dye your hair a lighter color than black, such as a medium to dark brown.

If your hair is black or very dark brown and you want to dye it blonde, again, it probably won't turn out that way. It'll most likely turn bright orange. And again, for this, either see a stylist or bleach your hair first. Just keep in mind bleaching is EXTREMELY damaging and should NEVER be done on hair that is even the least bit damaged.

4. What Brands are Good?
Level 2: Clairol
Level 3: Revlon

Good Luck Happy Coloring!
