The midwest, late 60s and early 70as.. Ronnie was the host of Creature Feature and I adored her. Then she got replaced sometime later by Dr. Sanguinary. He was all about the schlock, so i liked him too, but I missed the creep factor of Ronnie and her cat.

I always suspected Casandra Peterson (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark in So. Cal) must have seen Ronnie during her childhood too at some point...

Lots of great memories on this list. And like what I wrote, you refer to your childhood horror host. Isn't it amazing how few see these these days? My son was became Gravedigger Grimm last year but had to give it up due to expenses. I wonder if we could get a thread started discussing not your favorite horror flick, but your favorite horror host? anyone?

They were scary to ME as a kid... grin.

Of them all, 13 Ghosts is probably the least scary today. I watched it awhile back and could not figure out why it scared me so bad as a kid. LOL

That was entirely campy. Not scary at all to me, but are these supposed to only be scary to kids? The rest seem great choices, though.

LOL Jen, I was right. My daughter is 22 now. She's Azurely on Epinions.

Now I'll tell a tale on her. weeeeeeeee

There wasa movie called House when you two were about 5-ish, starred William Katt.. a really funny scary one if you haven't seen it.. anyway, she watched that damn movie over and over and over... then one morning I awoke to this gravelly voice in my bedroom:

You're pissin me off, Roger!

It was her, quoting the movie. She was mad that I had over slept. I busted out laughing.

Yup, she heard curse words and watched horror flicks from an early age...and amazingly enough, she hasn't killed one person yet! Imagine that! LOL

Doc:

I think the last time I had that giant ant nightmare, I thought "What the devil's name was that?" and didn't have it again. I don't think I've seen Them since I was a child, but I'd bet I'd laugh now.

Doc,

I saw this late at night on TV when I was five (reminder to self - don't let 5 year old sneak out of bed and watch late night TV). Scared me silly. But I loved it anyway. How demented is that? ;)

When I was a kid.. The first Nightmare on Elm Street scared the PANTS off of me -- I seriously had problems sleeping after I saw that movie.

And Poltergeist .. ::shudders:: That movie is just pure, unadulterated EVIL. I had a clown doll that looked EXACTLY like that little clown in Poltergeist, and every morning my parents would find it on the floor of their room. I would stand at the door and chuck that thing in there, and then run. After about two months of this, my parents finally threw the doll out. I've been afraid of clowns ever since (I can't go to a circus).

Sommeone mentioned Evil Dead 2.. That is an hysterical movie. I mean, come on, that hand flicking Ash off? Classic! I didn't necessarily find it scary, though.

Great Review.. I still need to do my Comedy Top 10...

The movie that scared me senseless as a child was Them (the 1954 version). I kept having nightmares about those giant ants until my early 20s.

I'm surprised to see that Leonard Nimoy and William Schallert made uncredited appearances in that one.

Didn't notice the links to your longer reviews, might point that out in your intro too.

Thanks again Chris! I've taken your advice on that.

As to X-Ray Eyes, I was disappointed with that one. It was ok, well.. pretty good actually, but then the ending just kinda ruined it for me, especially when I bought it and rewatched it as an adult.

And quickly fixed too. Well done.

Didn't notice the links to your longer reviews, might point that out in your intro too.

The story regarding Price is that he couldn't make the film because he was under an agreement/contract with AIP and Corman was going to make Premature with a competitor, PATHE'. It was after AIP and Corman went their seperate ways. However as they were filming PREMATURE with Milland cast as a 50 year old medical student (he had worked with Corman in X-The Man with X-Ray Eyes--another keeper) AIP bought out Pathe's interest in the film and released the film under AIP. Corman was able to use Price for most of the Poe adaptations henceforth.

Milland is so good at playing annoying characters...which he is in Premature Burial and things like FROGS...

You want something bad to happen to the guy.

No one however can top Price in either Masque or Pit or Tingler or several others (IMHO).

I wonder if you revisited some of these you would still think quite as highly of them

Actually yes, and reviewed several. Rather than rehash the review completely here, I made those links so folks can see the full deal.

As to the Miland/Price mix-up, that was merely a bLoNdE moment on my part, and I thank you for catching that one!

I've also added a bit more to the intro to make it clearer that these were from my childhood, since the title wasn't clear enough.

Again, thanks for catching that Miland/Price thing!

Great list! Ok, I actually haven't seen most of those 'cause I hate horror flicks, but I was really surprised that you listed Fall of the House of Usher, I didn't think that anybody knew that existed. That was a pretty good one to put on your list.

Creeps and Cheers to you,

While I really appreciate the effort to bring out some child-hood favorites.. I'm disappointed your coverage of them is so slight.

You're also utterly inacurate in regards to Premature Burial which does not star Vincent Price but instead Ray Milland.

Also a pity that advisors and others would give you a highly recommended nod without demanding you clean up this up immediately.

Like you choices... you really need to see things from this period like Black Sunday aka Mask of Satan etc., but of course this is utterly subjecive list and entirely based it seems on what you saw as a child. I wonder if you revisited some of these you would still think quite as highly of them... I know you wouldn't have confused Milland and Price if that was the case.

Try again and drop me an e-mail if and when you make adjustment so I can upgrade your rating. (We all make errors...show me you care enough to fix it and I'll certainly give you a better rating).

Poe (Reply to this comment)
by mark_thomas
Glad to see a lot of Poe-influenced stuff on the list. That guy was a freakin' genius. Probably not a lot of fun to hang around with, but a freakin' genius.

As for Evil Dead II, that movie was genius, too, but I didn't find it particularly scary. Mostly, I just laughed. Reanimator had the same effect. Still, they were both flat-out brilliant movies.

If I had to add one that did scare the crap out of me, Night of the Living Dead would be up there -- unless that falls in the "monster movie" category.

..come across anyone who liked "Pit and the Pendulum" before - I think its an absolute classic. But no "Evil Dead 2" or "Exorcist"? I'd definitely put them right up there.
