Gluehwein, hmmm can't help you with that but as far as Bratwurst goes, I found a good 'replacement' on www.stiglmeier.com, though there are others. (A close-by German restaurant helps me over the home-sickness. ;-)
Got your point regarding Red Lobster etc., though that wasn't exactly what I was thinking of regarding good food either. (though I must admit a few things aren't bad.)

Hey Doc,
you don't have to be European. You can be South American as well ;). But seriously: it is a rare sight here to watch someone actually taste the food, and it is even more rare for me to really delight on the food here. I guess I haven't found the right places yet...

Thank you for approving my spelling ;). Having grown up in Bratislava, Slovakia, I'm still more fluent in German than English.
Anyway, I was actually thinking about more "upscale" places than McDonald's, such as The Office, Red Lobster and Olive Garden. I personally haven't been to McD's for years now, ever since the novelty wore off. I have about 20 recipes for meals that taste better and are cheaper than the burgers, so I stick to my own cooking. Even so, I haven't had a good Bratwurst or Gluehwein (especially the Gluehwein) for years now...

It's all about the food! (Reply to this comment)

Thank you my dear friend... all these years I thought I was weird, now I see I was simply born in the wrong country!
I've been looked at quite askance for having occasionally closed my eyes during dinner and describing the taste as 'near orgasmic'. I also have the bad habit of taking bites of other people's food....
I'm a European stuck in a an American body!

Good essay! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for weaving the German "Guten Appetit" in your story. (Spelling approved by German native ... ;-) Anyway, you certainly have a couple good points. I generally do not believe that the US food in general is very bland, but too many times the shortcut to the golden arches is just too easy.

Hey Tom,
I've got similar memories as well. Whether of my mom in Slovakia, or a friend of mine I just returned from visiting in Puerto Rico. I still remember both of them ;)
Anyway, as for the phonetics, my dictionary tells me it's pronounced as "bwen pro'be.tcho". However, the way I heard it pronounced, made me search for the term "bon probecho" when I started gathering material for the review. Only a friend of mine corrected me. That's how I've heard it in Puerto Rico, though; from what I gathered different Spanish speakers pronounce the "v" differently.

Please, please, please come back and give us illiterate readers a phonetic pronunciation of the phrase.
Before I got to the bottom of your review, I was remembering a dinner many, many years ago with a young lady in the kitchen of her apartment. I can remember the sounds of the meal being prepared—pots, pans, bottles, platesthe smells, the cut of her dress, the look on her face, as she set my plate down on the table, gently slid it across to me and simply said 'Enjoy'. Quite a memorable evening.
One of the most sensual memories I have.
And no, I have no idea whatever became of her...
