The Bottom Line If you long suffered from acne then go for it. I only wish i had done it sooner and stopped some of the emotional scars beneath the skin.
Because of accutane, my acne is finally cured! I have great skin and it has tremendously boosted up my self-esteem. I only get the occasional 1-2 pimples during my menstrual cycle. I'm 26 years old and after being plagued by the disease of acne for 15 years, I have been finally freed. For years I have suffered from low self-esteem and self-loathing because I had severe acne. It was so bad I couldnt bear to look at myself in the mirror. I've tried all types of creams, anti-biotics, stopped eating greasy foods, chocolates- you name it, I've tried it and nothing worked! Nothing but accutane! It is the miracle drug and despite its possible side effects, I'd do it all over again. But as always with any medication, should check with your dermatologist and see what's good for you.
There are several possible side effects you can suffer from while on this drug. I wont lie to you, some of it is pretty serious. The most common side effects is extremely dry skin and lips. Other side effects include high cholesterol, liver damage, depression, miscarriage or abnormal fetus if pregnant while on this drug. I personally suffered from very dry skin and high cholesterol. You're warned not to eat high fatty, high cholesterol foods. You should stay away from alcohol and the sun. Should be on two forms of birth control (and they make you sign a waiver saying that you are). Effects of depression I hear is very low. Didnt happen to me but everyone is different. My doctor told me 70% of the cases are cured on the first treatment (6 months), 20% are treated with 2 treatments and an unlucky 10% show no effect with the drug.
