Raising Teens: The Clothing Controversy at Home

The Bottom Line There definitely has to be standards for clothing at home, but being comfortable has to be taken into consideration, too.

I happen to know that my parents want me to wear stuff that doesn't give the wrong impression of me, or could get me into a situation that I couldn't deal with. So I do know why they want me to wear what I wear.

Still, sometimes I think they go overboard. Once I was wearing a pair of black shorts, which I admit was a little short, but they weren't riding up my butt or anything like that. Did I mention that unless I tied those pants up tight, they would fall down to my hips? Also, I was wearing this blue striped shirt, which was V-neck styled. It wasn't made to be super long, it was made as a normal style shirt. But when wearing that shirt with my black shorts, if they weren't tied tightly, the shirt was kind of short. But, it did feel comfortable.

As a side note, that blue shirt would NOT be school appropriate, and I never did wear it to school. But I was told that I could wear it at home.

So here I was wearing this outfit, and I actually tied my black shorts up so that they would stay tight on me, and my shirt hit the top of the shorts, and my mom pulled that blue shirt down really far, like down to near the bottom of the shorts. That shirt is NOT meant to go down that far, and I didn't want it stretched out of shape. So I groaned. My mom didn't say much, but needless to say, I changed into a very long shirt. My mom seemed mad about the groan, so I also had to apologize for that.

That's where the controversy of clothing at home comes in. I know what my parents want, and I try to follow what they want, but I also want to wear stuff that's comfortable. And sometimes I try more than hard to pick out clothes that are appropriate for home, and it's a fact that even when trying harder than hard, I still don't always meet my parents' standards.

I really think that both me and my parents need to take this situation seriously, because like I keep saying, I know what they want of me, and why, but also, right now it's hard to go shopping and find clothing that is totally approvable.

Still, it IS my parent's job to raise me, so I give them some credit for caring a little bit about what I wear.
