Fundoplication (Reply to this comment)
by smartone86
Have you ever considered surgery? I am 18 and have severe GERD. Just yesterday I vomited 3 times. It's horrible. I take 80 mg of Nexium a day and Carafate. I'm at the point where a fundoplication seems like a good idea. I hope she grows out of it.

"GERD, what is Reflux..." comment. (Reply to this comment)
by deke_63
First, thank you all for the GREAT info... your "expertise" was of great help to us. I sympathize with those parents who are at the beginning of their respective GERD road. Information is the key here. Educate yourself as sometimes, as we've seen, a medical professional may not be well versed in this type of condition... and beware of those that leap towards medication, and even surgery, before implimenting the most simple of remedies.
We are very fortunate as our Ped, and GI doctors are well versed in GERD-ology :D After 4 terrifying Apnea episodes, (brought on by Reflux), and a few Emergency Room visits, we began to better understand the situation of our "colicky" baby. The hours of discontent had a source and a reason... that in and of itself was very very comforting.
To make a long story short, I will cut to the chase and offer this bit of advice: According to our Ped and GI doctors, the three main prongs of our strategy are as follows... Keeping the baby upright or at a 45 degree angle as much as possible, (especially when sleeping and at least 30 - 45 minutes after eating). Zantac, 10mg every 6 hours. And thickening of her formula (Allumentum) with rice cereal, (2 tsp per ounce of formula). Is this a cure all? Unfortunately not. However the difference in our baby is dramatic. MUCH less reflux, MUCH less discomfort, more of her personality and interaction to be enjoyed and cherished. We have additional issues to deal with still, Inemea (spelling?) and iron supplementation, (which brings big constepation problems and cramping). But we are very pleased with the results that our strategy has brought about.
REGLAN: Our baby was prescribed Reglan as well. While in the hospital and for two weeks at home we diligently administered the Reglan, (.5 ml per kg of weight). PLEASE educate yourself regarding Reglan. Reglan, used correctly, and when needed, can help - SOMEWHAT. The question we must ask ourselves is the benefit analysis question... do the benifits outweigh to risks. We chose to take our child off Reglan. As our Ped and GI doctors both agreed that Reglan plays a very minor role in GERD/Reflux recovery AND has a huge downside of some pretty terrible, and possibly permanent side effects. It is the Zantac/formula thickening/upright position, that is 90 - 95% of what is helping our daughter. So, (thank you God), so-far-so-good without Reglan. Again, my strong advice is to educate yourself regarding Reglan. Most (it seems to me, from our hospital visits), medical personnel are desensitized to Reglan as it is very widely precribed by an array of Doctors. And again, is the right circumstances Reglan may be a neccessary medication.
I thank those that wrote herein before me regarding these topics. The websights given and "expertise" offered was of great value. As stated before in this forum... You must be your child's best advocate. If your "colicky" baby seems to you to be too uncomfortable, (to put it mildly) - get to a GERD Specialist, or a qualified GI. Don't accept an overworked Ped's assertian that it's just another case of colic. If your quality of life is diminshed to a great extent, it's you and your family that have to experiance that on a day-to-day... NOT your Ped.
I bid you all Peace, and God Bless,

....in my prayers. I deal with reflux as an adult...it is miserable. Poor baby, I can hardly believe that a little one has to go through that. :(
You've written a great first Writer's Corner piece, and I'm sure it will prove to be very helpful to many people. Keep up the great writing.......kath
