The Bottom Line Your eyesight with lasik surgery will not be as good as it is with eyeglasses and you will have side effects that are, at best, annoying.

I had Lasik surgery about 4 months ago and am still struggling with it. First, the benefits:

Vanity. Let's face it, we all want to look good and if you have worn glasses for years, like me, you begin to imagine how handsome you will look without them. I tried contacts but they weren't for me -- they irritated my eyes and dried them out. So, for me, it was glasses or lasik.

Convenience. More of an issue if you wear contacts, I guess, what with no more saline and cleaning solution to mess with.

The downside:

Vision quality. Mine is good but not great. Especially when reading small text, I really have a problem. I squint a lot. I don't think there is any way that your eyesight with lasik can be as good as with well-fitted spectacles. It ain't razor sharp vision.

Halo effect. I have this in spades. Driving at night is very annoying and watching TV and movies is.. interesting. In general, I now seem very sensitive to bright lights and never, ever go out on a sunny day without sunglasses. So, in a sense, I still wear glasses!

Dry eye. Oh, yeah, you'll love this. Dry, itchy eyes, all the time. If you have dry eyes with contacts it is very, very likely that the situation will be worse with lasik.

Eye discomfort. Mine are still bothering me, feels like I have hard contact lenses in my eyes all the time. Burning and redness, too.

Wear glasses? Do yourself a favor, be true to yourself and embrace them. Go out and blow a few hundred dollars on new frames and you'll be a lot, lot happier than blowing many thousands on lasik.

For the record, my surgery was not performed at a low-cost Lasik mill. I visited such a place a fled within minutes. I looked around and chose an experienced doctor.

By the way, a year has now passed and nothing has changed for me. Except I'm more convinced than ever that you'd have to be crazy to pay someone to cut your eyes.
