ms11145's Full Review: Cleo Coyle - On What Grounds
Do you love coffee? Do you love culinary mysteries? Cleo Coyle has combined the two for a delightful coffeehouse mystery series. The first book in the series in entitled On What Grounds. The protagonist, Clare Cosi, has been enticed back to her old job of managing the Village Blend, a coffeehouse in Manhattan. With her now grown daughter in culinary school, Clare decides a change would be for the good. A perk to managing the Village Blend again is the rent free apartment which is upstairs from the coffeehouse. So she and her cat Java leave the New Jersey suburbs. One down side to this arrangement is that Madame, the owner of the Village Blend and Clares ex-mother-in-law, has high hopes of a reconciliation between Clare and her son, Matteo, who has also moved into the apartment, much to Clares dismay. Another thing that Clare did not expect was to find her assistant manager Annabelle left for dead at the bottom of the stairs surrounded by coffee grounds. The detectives decide that Annabelles fall was just an accident but Clare has a feeling that it was more than an accident since Annabelle is a graceful and talented dancer. After doing her own investigating, Clare finds that Annabelle has a devious step-mother and a secretive boyfriend. To throw more into the mix, Clare finds herself intrigued by the handsome detective who answered Clares call when she first found Annabelle.
This is a fun read as there is sarcastic humor between Clare and Matteo. One does not have to like coffee to enjoy this mystery. It kept me intrigued from the very first page. A bonus feature to the series is the collection of recipes at the back of the book and coffee tips sprinkled throughout
