that Aussie DOES test products/ingredients on animals. I don't understand this...doesn't it say they don't test on animals on their bottles?

RE: Animal cosmetic testing (Reply to this comment)
by rancidrox
Hello
Im 14 and recently did a speech on animal cosmetic testing. I looked up several websites and noticed like urself that many major companies still use these barbaric methods. However i'm still unsure if L'oreal tests on animals, a lot of websites said they did and a lot didnt. If the label on the back of the product says nothing about how they dont use animal cosmetic testing, should i assume that they do test on animals????

A slight mistake (IMHO) (Reply to this comment)
by Arthur.Rubin
The FDA requires animal testing, or some other certified (certification not done at government expense) equivalent method for any new product or ingredient in a food or cosmetic. "Food supplements" are exempt -- for now. (It's not just to protect the company from lawsuits.)
Hence -- any cosmetics or food company which does not do animal testing either uses only ingredients either previously tested on animals or in general use prior to 1938 -- or only uses the few approved non-animal tests, and only uses products which are allowed to be tested using those tests. This now appears possible for some products.
You should complain about the government, not about the industry. This list of companies is (IMHO) nearly worthless.
Of course, if you can find a reasonable source (other than PETA and the companies which claim not to do animal testing) to the contrary, I'll consider it.
By the way, in re Corrositex, from http://www.niehs.nih.gov/oc/news/corros2.htm ...
In addition, some chemicals cannot be evaluated in the assay, and these must be tested using the standard animal test, which requires one to three rabbits.
I won't rate the review, because it seems generally well written, but based on a faulty premise.

Thanks for the info. Every little bit we can do helps stop the cruelty. I'll have to replace Vaseline and Kleenex.

Re: You can drive yourself crazy (Reply to this comment)
by kparsons13
You have made some very good points all of which have gone through my mind this morning for the last 7 hours and realizing that this touches everything. However, I can at least not contribute to the companies just to have a better lipstick and go with one that doesn't test on animals. It is horrifying the pictures and the images of what is done all in the name of the cosmetic industry alone. Are we that vain? I understand every point you have made and I know that it would drive me crazy as you say because sadly enough this animal abuse or human abuse can touch almost everything in our lives. I just wanted people to be more aware and at least now have a choice. I would rather use a product that wasn't tested on animals like Aussie than a product by Suave that was. We are all adults and everyone makes their own choices. I guess for me I was just stunned that there were so many companies still practicing this. You can find something wrong everywhere, you are right, but it doesn't mean I have to ignore it anymore. I will continue to do my best to make consumers aware and try to buy products where animals are not tested. Thank you for bringing up very valid points, as usual, you always tend to bring up the importance in every comment I read almost.
Best wishes,
Kimmy

You can drive yourself crazy (Reply to this comment)

I appreciate your sincerity and the dismay that you felt when you researched the topic of animal testing for cosmetics. The problem is that this is just the tip of the iceberg and there's no a helluva lot a regular person can do to minimize the impact of modern life.
It's not a secret that animals have been tortured for decades for medical, pharmaceutical and scientific reasons. Animals have been poisoned, irradiated, shot in the head, had limbs broken and injected with stuff that is too strong to scrub your toilet with.
But I love cars and I enjoy having a powerful sports car. Unfortunately, oil profits are one of the major sources of Islamic terrorism that kills both humans and animals. Do you think I should switch to an electric car? These would be powered by electrical generating plants that have been responsible for decades of acid rain in the northeast US, threatening dozens of species with poisoned and reduced habitat.
Okay, I like to read books. Do you wanna do some research on the pollution caused by paper manufacturers? I drove past a paper mill once and nearly gagged at the stench.
Maybe you like jewelry? Gold mining puts lots of toxic heavy metals into the environment and the diamond trade is known to support international terrorism. The workers in these industries face terrible working conditions and laws that favor the mining companies at the cost of safety.
Pick something that you like and then research that industry. You will almost always find something that you'd rather not know.
There is no question that there is a lot of misery faced by animals at the hands of humans. All we can do is live our lives and leave the smallest footprints behind as we go.
I really enjoyed your essay... thanks for writing it!

Terrie:
With every review that I do I will link it back to this story if the name made the list. I was so awestruck last night that I could barely sleep. The pictures and stories were etched in my mind and I was hurting for the animals inside. It affected me that much.
Thank you and I hope many people do take a second look at what they are purchasing these days.
Best wishes,
Kimmy

Good job on this piece, Kimmy. The list of companies sure was an eye-opener. Hopefully people will boycott these companies and write to them, letting them know exactly why they are being boycotted. Consumers can end the suffering. Thanks for illuminating this tragedy. Terrie

I always enjoy supportive feedback from anyone that reads my pieces. If I was to never write anything else on this sight, this would be the most important piece that I have yet to do, regardless of all the heartache in the past that I have endured. I am more passionate about this than anything else.
Thanks again

Wow. I didn't know that they actually made the animals eat products like that! That disgusts me that these people would do that to a living and breathing animal! I really enjoyed this editorial and I agree with you 100%. ;)
