Amen brother (Reply to this comment)
by Andyman
I have always advocated a charity option for IS payouts. I will continue to do so. Problem is that, as much as people mock IS for being "pennies," it's funny how they actually want those pennies for themselves when it comes down to it. And the second problem is that all charities are controversial, and we have never been able to narrow the list to 6 that people can agree on. It doesn't matter which half dozen we choose, people will be peeved.
All that said, I totally agree and will keep trying.
As a side note... when accounts go inactive and the money is reclaimed... I know you'll be sad to hear this, but that is predicted by and factored into the IS budget. We pay out even more than we can afford each month because we know every few months we'll get some back from inactive accounts. So if we never did that, and just got to suck the money up and give ourselves raises or snort it or do what we pleased with it, then monthly IS would be even less.
Shocking but true!

This wonderful essay... (Reply to this comment)
by maceywuesthoff
...was written about two years ago, and since then, nothing has changed. I imagine that the powers that be haven't bothered to personally contact Rich to discuss this further, either. Does anyone have any inclination that the Epinions staff has even bothered to read it? I too am frustrated with the fact that my $3.00 will probably sit in Epinions forever and eventually go back to the staff for my hard work, simply b/c I haven't met some ignorant minimum.
Also, I am in agreement with another post that I read on here: We should at least get some sort of prizes--buttons, T-shirts, ANYTHING--for being on Epinions a long time, writing consistently helpful reviews, etc., even if we haven't reached the minimum. Prizes anc charity donations would certainly be an incentive for me to write more often than I do.
Thanks, Rich, for a wonderful idea that is well-penned.
Cheers,
Macey

I'd be for it.
I'll email feedback to Epinions tonight when I get in from work.
I, for one, am thrilled you will be around, even if in a modified manner. You are a tremendous writer and one of my favorite Ep personalities.
Kudos to you, my good man, kudos.

I remember (Reply to this comment)
by frazzledspice
getting Frequent Flier statements from American Airlines, telling me I could donate my miles to help transport sick children and their families to faraway medical facilities. I was never able to contribute my miles. I rarely flew American Airlines, and was never able to contribute the 10,000 mile minimum increment. I would have happily donated my 3,000 or so miles, if given the chance. And I agree with you--if you're donating your pennies, or your miles, or whatever, you shouldn't have to meet some minimum threshold to do so. You should be able to send them off with one click.

I think I'd rather have my pittance of IS go to you, Rich. You're funny.
Funny people are trustworthy, wise and thrifty. You deserve my money, because you are funny.

It's a terrific idea! (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum
Although I regularly give to charities on my own, so I probably wouldn't use it, I think it would be great motivation for a lot of people. The trick is finding a nice selection of non-controversial charities, but I think you hit on quite a few. I especially like Doctors Without Borders.

Great idea.
British writing sites already have that facility (they don't let foreign writers cash out at all).
Epinions should make their money from advertizers, not from keeping all the unclaimed cash.

Have you heard of the Man-Boob Foundation ? Very worthy cause for the most sorry of cases.
Check it Out:

And if you don't like this idea, I will donate every penny that I have ever or will ever make from epinions. That is including my almost $9 big ones that I have now.

That's why I mentioned organizations like Doctors without Borders and UNICEF. There are plenty of others with an international focus.
As far as the tax breaks are concerned, I'm in favoir of assigning them to Epinions as an incentive to make this work.

Sounds like a fine organization, Margaret.
Why don't you do all of us (you, me, and the charity) a favor by plugging this idea and that organization to Epinions.
You are a long-time respected member, and your opinion would probably carry a lot of weight.
Thanks.

Even those small amounts can add up quickly if combined with similar amounts from enough people. Between the two us, that's already $2.20. And combined with just the folks from this comment thread, we'd be well over a hundred and twenty bucks .
Let's try to make it happen, Katy.

Jan,
That's a great idea.
Let's give it a few days to see if the folks at Epinions respond in some way.
If not, I'll see if I can find someone to help set something up, since I'm a computer illiterate.
Stay in touch.

I don't usually (Reply to this comment)
by purplewiz
rate, let alone comment on anything in the member center, but I'd like to add my voice (and my $4.5some) to this idea. When I cashed out of epinions last time, I knew it would probably be the last time, since like many, I no longer have any inspiration or really any reason to keep writing here. But the thought that it might be helping someone...heck, I might even finish the several reviews sitting around on my computer :-).

International organizations (Reply to this comment)
by Penguinlady
My favorite is Heifer Project International (www.heifer.org) which provides pairs of animals to people in villages all over the world, including the US. You can "give animals" to your friends by donating a specific amount to the organization, say $50 for a pair of geese that go to a poor family somewhere. The people receive training in the care and breeding, and have to promise to share the offspring with their neighbors. It's amazing how a pair of goats or a hive of bees can lift an entire community out of proverty, with appropriate support. I LOVE this organization, and "give animals" to all my family and friends for birthdays and Christmas. And it operates all over the world, including the US.
Off my soapbox now!

Point taken on (at least adding) a truly international organization. The only problem with the Red Cross is religious discrimination (or anti-Semitism) -- the international Red Cross & Crescent refuses to affiliate with the Israeli equivalent.
There would also be a fair amount of paperwork if the member were to be able to take the charitable tax deduction in his/her own country.

"That money can really add up if enough folks choose to participate."
Exactly! I have a whole dime I'll never see, but it'd be nice to pool it with other writers' coins and see what we come up with. Kinda like the ol' piggy bank that doesn't look like much, until you crack it open and find several hundred dollars in change.
