Thank you so much for all the information's you has placed here. This was exactly what I needed.

You made it very easy for me to decide, that The Cook Islands will certainly be one of my stops on my next tour to the Pacific in January '10.

Reading your review almost made me cry... I feel the same way you do about the Cook Islands!! We spent our 2 week honeymoon on Aitutaki (Sep 06) and, like you said, I would move there in a heartbeat (if we could!). I got great info form your Epinions before our trip, and they make us choose this destination!! We plan on returning to Aitutaki every year... Nov 2007 - here we come!

we're considering a trip to the south pacific, and found your review very helpful. we've been to hawaii a few times so at least we have some frame of reference to compare things.
after reading the review, we're now leaning toward the cooks. thanks a lot.

Almost forgot. Yes, we hope to go to the U.S. Virgin Islands in March/April of 2004 (if all goes well).

Ken

Also, thanks to all for posting comments here. Not sure how much time I'll be spending here, but it's nice to be back none-the-less. It's very nice to hear I was missed.

Yeah, I know, there's definitely more development in the Cooks from what I'm hearing (and I'm not too happy about that). Prices are starting to rise a little too. So far though, still a pretty nice place to go. I trust (maybe foolishly) that the Cook Islanders can keep a lid on things. Their laws prohibiting ownership of land by non-locals helps keep the big hotels out. I don't think that's going to change. Still, you bring up a very valid concern/fear. I hear you.

Regarding overwater bungalows - I think it can be argued both ways as to whether or not they add to to the ambience or detract from it. Certainly, I would not want every possible location to feature them. Some areas certainly need to be just left alone. On Bora Bora in particular, more and more folks are starting to voice the opinion that there are getting to be too many of them. They may be right.

I can also see your concern about the possible destruction of coral when overwater bungalows are built - however - much depends on exactly where the units are built. The Pearl Beach Resort on Bora Bora (where we stayed) was built on a vast barely-submerged sand bar. There was no coral there whatsoever. I do know however in some of the other resorts there was coral (some of which was certainly damaged).

Fantastic review, and since I've been both to Hawaii (numerous times :-)!), and to French Polynesia, I will now have to put the Cook Islands very high on my 'to visit' list!!!
Exotic AND reasonable, what more can a traveler ask for??
Nice to have you back, Ken!

....sharing in these parts once again. I wrote a piece a while back asking if anyone had seen you. I didn't get a response. I was just hoping you were out somewhere in the South Pacific relaxed and peaceful.

I do hope to hear more of your adventures. This one was quite complete, interesting, and full of very useful detail.

To go to just one of these destinations would be like heaven. Someday......maybe someday.

Once again, great to see you,

Phil
