The Bottom Line Whatever you believe, make sure your children understand death is hurtful for us but many times a blessing for the suffering.

Death is never an easy part of life to cope with. We as adults sometimes feel as though we are withering up and dying ourselves. The pain sometimes is so deep even thinking about explaining this to your children seems unrealistic.

My children experienced their first death when they were 6 and 8 years old. There brother had been abused and left mentally challenged when in the care of a child care provider. He lived in a foster home for disabled children for 4 years we were a big part of his life and grew so attached to this little boy who overcame so many challenges. When one day he had no fight left to give his body was tired and he never woke up. I was shattered beyond anything I had ever felt.

The next thing to do was to go get the children out of school. They knew something was wrong when their Uncle and my Fiancé came to pick them up. When they got to the house, I felt an overwhelming peace come over me. I sat each of them on a knee and explained that I needed to talk to them about something serious. I told them that their brother was now in Heaven. That he was tired of being so strong and now he could be free from all the pain.

They both were crying when the youngest jumped down ran to her room and made the most wonderful picture of her brother walking on gold streets. Walking....Baby boy never had been able to walk. We went through a lot of emotional exhaustion and it still pains to this day. But we all know he is not suffering nor is in any pain. My children were inspired by their brother. He never gave up and when the Doctors called him a vegetable, he was having no part of that. He learned basic sign language, he could say Mama, and he could give you five. He was our hero.
