| mattjoe's Full Review: Sony 8MB Memory Card PS2 |
A must have for every Playstation 2 owner is a memory card. There is really no way around this fact of life. Like death, taxes, and politicians who cheat on their wives with interns, you can't avoid this.
Every Playstation 2 owner needs to buy a memory card, with no memory card, you must begin every game from the beginning. This may be no big deal for those who only wish to play games against their friends, have no intention of ever finishing a game or just like to sit down and play for 40 or 50 hours without ever stopping. Me, I have a much shorter attention span than that, and so need a memory card.
The Sony Memory card for Playstation 2 is large, an 8 MB size card. Being non technical, I questioned just what this means. A game in need of saving can take up any number of kilobytes. For example, the game Gran Tourismo 3 requires a minimum of 256 K of space. So, what does that translate into I wondered?
I have found out that Kilobytes which one would normally think means 1,000 actually means 1,024 bytes in binary. And there are 1,048,576 bytes in a Megabyte, which means, I have a memory card which can hold 8,388,608 bytes. Not to shabby, and surely enough to save a few games. That still doesn't answer how many Kilobytes are in a Megabyte. Strangely enough, you will find 1024 Kilobytes in a Megabyte. 8 MB equals 8,192 Kilobytes. Assuming an average required room of 300 KB per game saved, you could save 27 games on a card. That is A LOT! Which also means you would have spent $1350 on games alone for your Playstation 2.
The Memory card is about the same size as the original Playstation memory card. Tiny, thin, about 3 inches by 1 and a half inches, and about a quarter inch thick. You could lose these between the cushions of your couch.
THE BAD
Yes, the memory card has negatives. $35 is kind of steep for this card.
For $300 you'd expect a Playstation 2 to come with one of these, but you'd be wrong. It also will not work with the old Playstation, but you don't expect it to.
There are various after market companies that also make the Memory Cards, with my experience from Playstation One, I would never use a NAKI card, it never once was recognized by the playstation, and a NYKO card only seemed to work on my Playstation, I couldn't bring it with me to other peoples. MadCatz did work right. But all these brands are usually only a few dollars cheaper than the Sony card. May as well get the one that always works.
