Much as I liked AFTER DARK, Jan and Jack, I would prefer by a tad on my list THE GRIFTERS, which came out at about the same time (also based on a Jim Thompson novel).

I took a women's studies class in college on film noir. We watched: Bound, Lady From Shanghai, Murder My Sweet, Devil in a Blue Dress, and some others. This was all new to me, and although the movies were far from what I might normally watch, the concept of film noir is pretty fascinating. Interesting to read your review!
