DrD's Favorite Movies from 2000Aug 22 '03 (Updated Feb 05 '04) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The bottom line talks during movies.... Anyone who claims to have seen every movie released in 2000 is lying. There were 10,153 of them. Egads! So, I feel safe in qualifying my own little list by saying I have not, in fact, seen them all. This, then is simply a list of my own personal favorites out of the ones that I had the pleasure to see. I realize fully there may be one or two that I should have seen and didn't for some reason. I also see that I've sloughing off on writing reviews. Only one of these ten have I written a full review on so far. I intend to correct that error at my earliest convenience, probably starting with Gladiator very, very soon..... 1. Gladiator ~ What We Do In Life Echoes In Eternity. Slammed by a few, but hailed by many as one of the top best ever. I'm in the latter camp. Russell Crowe was an outstanding Maximus in this tale of a man set against horrible odds in the time of Roman Gladiators. Betrayed by the new Emporer who has taken the throne by slaying his own father, Maximus' entire family is murdered and he is captured and enslaved. A simply amazing epic that you cannot miss. Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Sound, Best Costume Design, and Best Visual Effects. 2. Cast Away ~ At the edge of the world, his journey begins. Who can deny the allure of Tom Hanks stranded on a Deserted Isle with his imaginary friend? Outstanding performance. Hanks made this movie immensely gratifying. Nominated for two Oscars, won the Golden Globe and several others. 3. O Brother, Where Art Thou? ~ They have a plan, but not a clue. Hey man, it's George Clooney & The Coen Brothers, what more need I say? heh. A very amusing romp thru the countryside by three escaped convicts. One of those comedies that you just have to go out and by after you've seen it. 4. Chocolat ~ One Taste Is All It Takes. Wonderfully fun comedy/romance with Johnny Depp, Carrie-Anne Moss and Alfred Molina about a woman and her daughter who open up a chocolate shop in a French Village and the trials that await them. A story of trying to gain acceptance. Very moving and amusing at the same time. 5. Erin Brockovich ~ She brought a small town to its feet and a huge corporation to its knees. Julia Roberts plays the lead role in this story based on actual events surrounding a small town and the folks made ill by a giant corporation's actions regarding waste at one of their plants. Fantastic story played extremely well by Roberts. 6. Quills ~ There are no bad words... only bad deeds. Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine in this tale of The Marquis de Sade. This is a subject that has long intrigued me anyway, and this movie was very well done. Rush is The Marquis de Sade. If you have any interest at all in the origins of the term 'sadism', you have to watch this movie. 7. Shadow of the Vampire ~ The story of the filming of Nosferatu starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. Possibly one of my favorite vampire flicks of all time, this film takes license with the story and implies that the lead in Nosferatu was, in fact, the vampire himself. Awesome casting and plot. Go ahead! Eat the writer! That will leave you explaining how your character gets to Bremen! 8. The Patriot ~ Before they were soldiers, they were family. Before they were legends, they were heros. Before there was a nation, there was a fight for freedom. Mel Gibson is just so damn good at playing the part of the sensitive tough-guy. Toss in Heath Ledger and you have me hooked. When his son is killed, Gibson's character becomes embroiled in the American revolutionary war. This one will suck you in from moment one. 9. Coyote Ugly ~ Tonight, they're calling the shots. John Goodman, Tyra Banks, and Piper Perabo about the bar scene and the power women have over men; about one woman coming out of her shell. Lot's of folks hated this one. I loved it! This was a rip-roarin' good time of a movie. Stupid as hell, yes... but still extremely fun. Since being entertained is always my main criteria, this one makes the list. 10. Dragonheart: A New Beginning ~ A New Beginning starts quite awhile after the Dragonheart ended. Bowen has grown old and died, but his legend lives on. The world thinks dragons are long gone.. a very sad thing! But harken, my friends, for there is a baby dragon that still lives! Deep in the basement of the monastery, hidden from harm, is Drake. Christopher Masterson of Malcom in the Middle plays the lead. 11. Vulgar ~ So... I'm cheating and adding an extra movie. heh. This is produced by Kevin Smith and he has a small role along with Jason Mewes, but this ain't no Clerks, folks. This is a very dark film having to do with male rape. Excellent. 12. Greenfingers ~ Yup. Cheating again. Can't help it! Besides, if I didn't cheat, how deviant would that be? I rest my case.... ok Greenfingers is about a group of convicts in a pilot prison system who get into gardening. I know, sounds dumb and boring. It isn't. Go read my full review. Clive Owen and Helen Mirren are the bomb. While browsing thru memory lane, I did run across one that missed my radar, and I'm wondering if I should now seek it out just so I can review it... Big Tit Smotherfuckers. Whadya think? heh. OH, and let's not forget Big Bust Pissing Perverts. I wonder if they're in the database...... Hey I am not making these up! I dare you to find them and review them... double dog dare! |
