We'll Remember Everything

Jul 26 '03 (Updated Feb 09 '06)

The Bottom Line "where do we go from here...when the feeling wont fade..." ~Ryan J. Lariviere

While checking out baystaterock.com, the site for WAAF's local music show, I was taken aback when I read this statement:

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Ryan J. Lariviere lead singer of the band "Dismal". Ryan was in a car accident on March 26th and 6 weeks later sadly succumbed to his injuries and passed away on May 2, 2003."

I immediately e-mailed my friend Kevin to see if it was the same Dismal. Sadly, it was. A few years ago, Kevin had sent me a four-song CD of his Assumption College classmate's band. I listened and was very impressed. Though the sound was not of the highest quality, there was no denying the talent that lied within. I spun the CD on my college radio show nearly every week and got some positive feedback on it.

Dismal's sound, as you may have guessed by the name, is heavy, angry, and dark. Baring similarities to Staind, Sevendust, and other metal bands, Dismal was both heavy and melodic. Their music is perfect to crank up and rock out to, but it can easily get stuck in your head.

The CD starts with Unwanted Sin, a heavy tune demonstrating Lariviere's loud, pained vocals as the other instruments pulse forward. Other sounds are mixed into the bridge to give the song a more haunting feel. Next up is Actions Not My Own, another headbanging, chant-along, which effectively oscillates between soft and loud.

After those two heavy tracks, they take it way down with the acoustic Broken Lullaby. The softer music allows Lariviere's voice to shine even more. The pained, raw emotion comes out perfectly, especially at the closing crescendo.

The disc's grand finale is I Remember Everything. The growling hook is tremendously powerful: "And I feel like I do/ Cuz you caued me so much pain/ And I stand faced with you/ I remember everything." The guitar work is excellent as well, providing a perfectly p*ssed-off background for the lyrics. This would have been an easy choice for a hard-rock radio single.

Ryan Lariviere will be missed by family, friends, and fans. The rock world may never know what could have been, but the music of Dismal will live on for many.
