Day 0

Miya was walking home one day from school. Finally, they had hit summer vacation- she couldn’t wait to sit around in a pool at some hotel near any given historical landmark. Miya loved the water- and sometimes believed the water loved her, too.
“Hey, Miya!” screamed a voice from behind her on the sidewalk. She turned around to see Lani- she’d recognize that blonde hair and Legolas tee-shirt anywhere. Lani was a family friend, and she got along with Miya particularly well, despite being only 15 years old. “What’re you going to do this summer?”
Miya smiled, and walked along the sidewalk with her. “Well, first I suppose I’d have to fill out some decent job applications, but mostly I’ll just be celebrating the end of High school.”
“You’re so lucky,” Lani said with a giggle. “I’ve got three years left!”
“I’m sure you’ll get through,” replied Miya, punching her playfully. “So are you doing anything this weekend? Want to rent a movie or something?”
“Sure, that sounds great,” said Lani. “Two Towers just came out, let’s watch that!”
Miya laughed. “Okay, but first I’ve got to get a few things to get here,” she opened the door into the Occult store.
Inside, it was much like you’d expect any store dealing with witchcraft- a bunch of weird trinkets and books, and a few supplies, with a pure Goth behind the counter. Miya picked up a dream catcher from a small tub, and walked up to the counter. “Excuse me, I’d just like to buy this,” she said. While the clerk was ringing it up, she noticed a blank video tape behind him. It was slanted, kind of supported by several books. “Sir? What’s that tape right there?” she asked. He looked behind him. “I’m not sure- some students just came in today with it, told me to make sure it’s somewhere somebody could see it. I haven’t had time to look it over yet.”
“Could I please have it?” asked Miya. She didn’t know why she wanted this tape so much, but it seemed important.
“Alright, that’d bring it up to two eighty-five,” he said, handing her the tape as he rang it up, adding it too the dream catcher.
She left the store, with Lani waiting outside. “So what did you get?” she asked Miya.
“Well, I got a pretty nice dream catcher, and this one weird video tape.” She looked over it. It still had the tab on it, which must have meant somebody didn’t care much what happened to the contents. She looked for any type of descriptive label, but the most she could find was a small sticker that read “Copy.”
Lani looked at it, as if she remembered something she had read in a magazine before. She shivered. “Well, maybe we could use it to make a copy of Two Towers. Come on, let’s go to the video store.”
“Two Towers?” asked another voice from behind them. It was Schleppy- another of Miya’s friends, who had graduated along with her, although he was almost a year younger than her. “You guys are gonna rent Two Towers?” he asked again, almost collapsing on the sidewalk.
Lani laughed as they went into the video store. There were about three full walls filled with copies of Lord of the Rings, so they were quick to grab one and rent it out. As they were waiting for the inept worker to scan it, Lani laughed a little. “Hey guys, want to hear a freaky story I just remembered hearing at school?”
Schleppy in particular was interested. He was used to hearing “freaky” only in relation to himself. “Sure, throw it at us.”
Lani laughed again. “Well, it’s a little cheesy, and I don’t remember all of it- but there’s this story about this tape that kills you when you watch it. Technically seven days later, but that’s beside the point. Somehow, the tape’s cursed or something. When they die- and this is the creepy part- they look like they’ve seen death itself coming to claim them. Pure terror stuck on their faces.” She smiled evilly, with the attention of not only her friends, but one of the other patrons of Blockbuster. “It’s not real though- just an urban legend. My friend’s sister’s acquaintance’s cousin’s friend watched it- that sort of thing. But that tape,” she said, pointing to the cassette in Miya’s hand, “That tape fits the description exactly. Nothing but “Copy” on the front, you know?” She smiled, having sufficiently creeped out everybody within five feet. “That’s not all the weird stuff that’s been going on lately. Last night, I actually set a candle alight, just by thinking about it. I might be a pyrokinetic or something,” she said with a smile.
The other customer who had been listening to Lani’s story got up. “I think I remember reading about that story before. It was in one of those occult magazines, the article was ‘Video Nasty.’ My name’s Chris, by the way,” he added, reaching out his hand.
Miya looked at him. “Aren’t you that kid whose parents gave his own apartment?”
Chris nodded, embarrassed- he was only eighteen, but had been kicked out of his house the previous year for various misdemeanors in his parents eyes. Luckily, they had given him a place to stay. It was nice, having his own place- but he got lonely a lot. “So, why don’t you guys come over to my place, we could watch that video, see what’s on it. In fact, let’s make a party out of it- I’ll invite my neighbor.”
Miya nodded. “That sounds like a great idea!” she said.
Schleppy smiled. “Just let me call my parents, let them know where I’m going.”
“I’ll call my aunt,” said Lani. Miya was silent, and didn’t pull out her cell phone.

Soon the group was all at Chris’s house. His neighbor was already waiting. He was about 14 years old, with red hair and pale skin. He had a sword on his belt.
“Hey Chris,” said the kid. His voice made him sound like an adult. There was a certain authority to it.
“Hey Zebu,” Chris replied.
“So what did you say we’d be watching?” asked Zebu. He looked at the tape. “Oh, no- not with that tape mumbo jumbo again,” he said, rolling his eyes. “You’ve tried to trick me before with this.”
“Well, I think I’m serious this time. My new friends here found it at an occult store, the owner told them it’d come from some students, and they wanted it to be bought fast. So I think we should watch it.”
Lani picked the tape back up, and fiddled around with its spool winders. She closed her eyes, and instead of seeing black, she saw a young girl wearing a white dress, with black hair covering her face. The girl began to look up, and Lani opened her eyes.
She looked a little apprehensive. “Can’t we just watch Two Towers first?”
“Nah,” said Chris. “I’ve got it on my computer, I’ve seen it enough lately.”
His eyes lingered on Lani for a while- she was indeed a very beautiful young girl. He hadn’t had the chance to date for a long time- he had to get a job to pay rent, and that didn’t leave much time for anything other than study.
Lani was getting very nervous- she didn’t really think this was the tape, but she didn’t want to test her theory. She was looking for any sort of distraction. Luckily, the doorbell rang, and without waiting for anybody to answer it, the man- or was it a woman?- swung it open, holding a pizza.
“Hey, my name’s Matt. Here’s the pizza you crazy kids ordered,” said the hermaphrodite. “Hey look… a freaky-*ss video cassette - it's giving bad juju...now give me my money.” Without waiting for Chris to get out his wallet, he jumped on his scooter, in the hallway to an apartment complex, and zoomed off.
The group was speechless. Zebu took the moment, with Lani stunned, to grab the tape and shove it into the VCR. The sound of the static caught everybody’s attention. They gathered around the television and watched.
The static was interrupted with a view of a bright circle of light- there was a face looking at the camera from inside of it. His face looked truly evil, with sweat dropping into the camera’s general area. This image lingered for a minute, then it changed.
A girl was wearing a white dress. Lani gasped- it was the same girl as before. She was standing before a playground, which slowly caught on fire.
Schleppy was sitting down, watching with everybody else, and his hand slowly raised and waved at the girl. Schleppy looked at his hand curiously, then beat it down to the ground again.
The flames engulfed the entire area, and it changed again.
The screen was entirely white for a few seconds, until some dark edges turned up on some of the corners. These continued to grow, until it was obvious they were looking at a mask. It fell back onto a stage, which in turn was melting, as a squishing noise began growing louder and louder, before the scene changed.
It was a branch holding a chrysalis, as if from a caterpillar, and it was shining brightly. It took a while for the group’s eyes to focus, and when they did, they saw what looked like a human inside of it.
The video flashed to a baby in its mother’s womb, kicking around, almost ready to be born. It stopped and looked at the camera, and a strange red glow started shining from behind it.
The Girl’s head was shown again, and it split like a cell, forming a copy. Those split, then those did, until the screen was completely covered with thousands of copies of her face. They warped into one face again, and it began to look up.
The screen broke into static.
