LTC insurance is definitely an important thing to consider (Reply to this comment)

I just finished dual master's degrees in public health (health administration) and social work. This is a topic that was covered quite extensively in my studies in both degree programs. I also have parents who are in their "golden years". So far, they're both doing pretty well. My dad is a 70 year old Air Force veteran and my mom just turned 65 (yesterday, in fact). They purchased long term care insurance not too long ago, but it wasn't without a lot of pain. My dad has some health issues that made it hard and expensive for them to get coverage. The fact is, the earlier you purchase coverage, the less expensive and less of a hassle it is... of course, you'll also be putting premium money into the insurance company's coffers. But long term care insurance is not just for old people. It can be used if you become permanently or temporarily disabled, too-- just check your policy carefully before you buy. Remember, accidents can happen to anyone at any age and medical expenses can wipe out your money before you know it. Medicaid will cover your expenses if you're poor, but Medicaid is partly state run (the federal government matches state funding). If you live in an especially poor state, you could wind up in really bad shape. By the way, Medicare is not just for old people, either... it also covers some disabled people. Anyway, I definitely think it's a good idea to think about investing in it before you have too many health problems.

to have this insurance, nursing homes are so expensive and can eat away at someone's lifetime savings in no time. I wish both of my parents would get this insurance. I know if I am able when I reach their age that I will. Very nice review, that brings an important subject into light.

...very sound advice. It is so important to think and plan about insurance, as much as some of us don't want to!
