"Nothing Can Have Value Without Being An Object Of Utility"

Written: Mar 29 '07
Pros:size, color, scrubbing action
Cons:nothing that would hinder my rating
The Bottom Line: O-Cel-O Utility Sponge - dirt has no place to hide!

quote by Karl Marx

Background:
Having had much success with O-Cel-O Light Duty, No Scratch, and Heavy Duty sponges, I decided to give O-Cel-O Utility sponges a try. Utility sponges come two to a pack. I bought mine at Stop and Shop for their regular price of $1.69

About O-Cel-O:
O-Cel-O is located on the web at www.o-cel-o.com.
There you will find a wide-variety of sponges and a usage chart to tell you where to use each. Some types are made specifically for glassware, some are made specifically for countertops, some for use with cast iron, some for cleaning bathrooms, and some for cleaning cars.
O-Cel-O can also be reached by phone at 1-800-846-8887.

Design:
O-Cel-O Utility sponges are rectangular in shape and look about twice the size of dish-sponges. They measure 6.0 by 3.6 by 0.9 inches in size. Unlike their dish-sponge cousins, they do not have a scratchy-side. Instead they have just the regular sponge look, except for the unique colors they come in; blue, orange, pink, green, purple, blue. Utility sponges, like all of the O-Cel-O sponge family, have 3M technology, which means the sponge will maintain its bright color and its scrubbing action throughout its life.

Use:
O-Cel-O Utility sponges are ideal for cleaning large surface areas in the bathroom and kitchen. They are too large to clean dishes and not big enough to wash cars. But they are the perfect size for tackling the kitchen countertop, refrigerator, sink area in the kitchen and bathroom, scrubbing the tub, or the toilet, and many other uses. These sponges are not designed for use in aquariums.

Care:
Because O-Cel-O Utility sponges are often used with disinfecting products, they should be rinsed thoroughly after each use. Also, these sponges should not switch uses; meaning after cleaning the tub, it is not ideal to use this sponge on dishes or other places where chemicals can be ingested into the body.

On the Utility sponge package, O-Cel-O suggests sterilizing these sponges by placing them in boiling water.

I usually use one sponge from the package in the kitchen and the other sponge in the bathroom. I use them at least once a week and change them every month or two.

Likes:
- Bright colors brighten up my day while cleaning.
- Colors do not stain or fade with cleaning.
- Sponge easily rinses out and does not hold dirt, grim, soap-scum, or other nasty things.
- Does not hold odors.
- Comes in package of 2 allowing one sponge for kitchen and one sponge for bathroom.
- Soft and gentle on my hands.
- Easily lifts soap-scum around sink, and in tub with little ‘elbow grease’ and without scratching surfaces.
- Works well with Soft-Scrub and other cleaners. Cleaners do not affect sponge durability and do not hinder ability to scrub and get things clean.
- The sponges come pre-moistened and maintain their moisture from use to use better than other sponges we’ve used.

Dislikes:
- Has no disinfectant agent. Does not kill bacteria, viruses, or germs. Obviously, this is similar to other sponges, but wouldn’t it be nice if Utility sponges came with this kind of power.

Recommendation:
O-Cel-O is my favorite brand of sponges and they didn’t let me down in the Utility sponge department. The Utility sponge is great for large jobs in the kitchen and bathroom. The size of the sponge makes completion of cleaning easier and more effective. The sponge is gentle and does not scratch surfaces, but it is also tough enough to tackle nasty jobs and shows no signs of wear. I can tell this sponge and I will be friends for a while, at least the next couple months until I replace it and pick out one of its new colorful sisters:)
