Zebu opened the door to the Regional Library. It was late at night, so nobody else was there except a few college students cramming for finals. I cant believe Im actually doing this, he thought. He walked inside, amongst rows upon rows of heavy bookshelves. "Alright, Chris phoned me about something involving Japan and some Awasawaka-or-something Plague. Thatd be a good place to start." He walked over to the foreign imports aisle. He figured it would take a while, and started looking for any books by anybody whose name sounded like what Chris had told him. But something stopped him. He felt somebody behind him. He turned around, and saw a hazy figure. It had a towel over its head- Zebu couldnt tell who it could be. The figure was pointing toward a colorful book in the middle of the other side of the aisle. Zebu approached the figure, but it vanished. Zebu looked at the book. It wasnt hard to miss- somebody had put it down so that the cover was showing. It seemed to have wide pink-and-white stripes, kind of spiraling down to a deaths head in the middle. He picked it up- the book was called Ring, and somebody named Koji Suzuki wrote it. He opened it to a random page. Those who have viewed these images are fated to die at this exact hour one week from now. If you do not wish to die, follow these instructions exactly Zebu read on- it didnt take a genius to figure out that this was the book he was looking for. Unfortunately, there was no more- according to the book, the video tape had stopped, replaced in part with a mosquito zapper commercial. Zebu sighed, and went up to the counter to check the book out. --- Lani looked at them nervously. "I have to go now," she said. Lani walked out the door and headed for home. She opened the door- her aunt was asleep. Lani was glad- shed have a hard time explaining why she needed the computer at this late an hour. She sat down at the desk. On her right was a picture of her parents about a month before her mother died. And on her left, her mother a few days before- it was hard to tell it was her though. She still was smiling, or at least Lani thought she was. Somehow, the face seemed warped and stretched out of proportion. She put the picture face-down on the desk, and started typing in the search engine. Asakawa Ak. Too many blogs there. Lets try Asakawa Virus, in quotes. Nothing. Asakawa Video Virus, without them. Here we go, said Lani to nobody in particular. She started clicking on the different links. --- Chris sits in silence with the other people. "What do you think is really going on?" he asks. I dont know, said Schleppy. But Ive got to get home right now. Ill look up stuff on cursed videos tonight. Miya nodded. And Ill go make sure Lanis doing alright. She really doesnt cope too well under this much pressure. The two of them left. Chris waited for a few minutes, deliberating what to do now. Miya had just said Lani wouldnt be coping well, so he decided to make sure she was alright. He picked up the phone, and began to ring Lani. The phone came up with a busy signal. "She must be on the Internet already," he said into the telephone before he puts it down. He was pleased- she at least was doing good for starters. He began to read his new book 'Baise-moi' for a few minutes, before he closed it and stared out the window at the terrible night. --- Lani finally found a decent link. To her surprise, it was at Amazon.com, and it was a Japanese movie called Ringu. She sat there for a few minutes, trying to figure out whether or not she should order it. Finally, just as she was about the click the send button, she heard a crash outside. Lani looked out of her window and saw Miya on the ground outside. It was raining, and Miya was soaked and cold. She looked dead. Lani ran outside. Miya was barely even breathing, and Lani tried to get her to stand up. She was still out cold. Lani carried Miyas unconscious body inside, and got back to the computer. She clicked send before she had time to argue with herself about it. The book would be there the next morning. --- Miya woke up- she did not remember where she was at first, but then it came back- the video, the phone call, and falling down in the rain on her way to Lanis house. She looked outside- the ground was still wet from the night before, but the sky was blue and the sun was shining. Under different conditions, she would be outside, celebrating the first real summer day. But now, it seemed offensively ironic. You awake? asked Lani. Miya nodded, not looking at her. Lani looked at Miya sadly. "Listen, I'll call Chris and Schleppy once the DVD gets here." DVD? asked Miya. Oh yeah, said Lani. I forgot to tell you. I was looking up stuff on Asakawa last night, and I found a movie, its called Ringu. It should be here any minute now. As if on cue, there was a knock on the door and Lani went to get it. There was a man from UPS with a package for her. She went back to her room and opened it up. There was a DVD in and she smirked and called Chris. While Lani talked to Chris, Miya picked up the DVD. ""The original movie that inspired The Ring?" What a weird title blurb." The bell rang- it was Schleppy. In his hand, he held a small tape recorder, the type newspaper interviewers use. Check this out. Wait, howd you get here so fast, Schleppy? asked Miya. Plot device- but I think this is important. Schleppy showed them the tape player. "I found this online, at the Seattle news archive. It was entitled the "Ring Curse", and had a pretty convincing warning that it'd have the same effect that the Asakawa report does. Since we've all seen the original tape, it shouldn't do much to us, though." "It talked mostly about a little dead girl named Samara." Wait a second, said Miya. That name sounds familiar. Wasnt there some movie a few years back with a girl named Samara in it? Yeah, said Schleppy. Wasnt it called the Ring? Lani and Miya glanced at each other. Listen, said Miya. Ill try and find out more about Samara online, you two can listen to the report. When Miya was searching she came across a weird article. "Morgan Ranch - Mysterious multiple suicide of ranch horses" She clicked on the article and started reading about how horses owned by the Morgans of Moesko Island mysteriously jumped off cliffs during a period in the seventies. She clicked Print, and got the sheets out of the printer tray. This had to be important in the case of Samara Morgan. Okay, lets play this thing, said Lani. Schleppy clicked the play button, and the tiny mechanical noises began, sounding strangely louder than usual. This is Rachel Keller, from Seattle News. The story I am about to recount is completely true, strange as it may be. About ten days ago, my niece Katie died, the woman said. My son Aidan knew somehow that she was going to die before she did- he played with her often, she must have told him at some time. After her death, Aidan- Schleppy sped up the tape. I guess you get the picture. Well, she found out that Katie and four friends had been staying in a cabin at Shelter Mountain Inn, and watched a video tape. She watched it herself, and then her ex-husband, Noah, who she needed for help, and then Aidan, who found a copy of the tape late at night and put it in. Rachel started doing all kinds of investigative work, following news stories about horses Like this one? Miya asked, handing them the article. Yes, exactly like this. Horses jumping off cliffs. She also found out that Anna Morgan had done the same thing about 18 years before, the same time that her daughter went to the mainland to live at a clinic. Rachel determined that the daughter had made the tape somehow, when they found a picture behind the wall paper in Samaras nook above the horses stables. It was a burning tree, one of the images in the tape, and the tree was back at Shelter Mountain. They went there and found a well beneath the cabin Katie had stayed in. Down there was Samaras body. Rachel and Noah hoped they had stopped the curse- but the next day, Aidan had a mark on his arm, like Rachel did after Samara grabbed it in a dream. Noah was dead within an hour, that morning. Miss Keller didnt say how she saved her son, only that she did and that she couldnt possibly feel right about letting others know- all she said was that saving yourself could end the world. Schleppy finished, happy with the audience response. That does sound like the Ring, Miya said. But how could the Ring be based both on the Keller report and the Japanese movie, from the Asakawa report? Lani asked. Schleppy shook his head. I have no clue. Maybe the movie was only based on the Japanese movie and report- and this thing happened independently, with the exact same names and locations. --- Chris started wlking to Lanis. It was only a short bit away, so he'd be there in no time. Chris walks up to Lani's door, which is located just a few minutes walk from the local horror DVD retailer. He knocks on the door and waits for a reply. Zebu walks up to Lani's house holding what looks like a square trumpet case. He sees Chris. "Hey, looks like Lani has more than one stalker!" He winks. "Anyway," he says, flipping out a book from his pocket, "I found Asakawa's Ring report, in novel form." His expression turns serious. "The freakiest thing happened at the library today. He stares up at the house.! "Damn, will they hurry up and answer the door?" Lani got up and ran over to the door and opened it and sees Chris and Zebu. "I got the DVD!" Miya "well listen and I will tell you, I found out something about samara, she was born a few years after, Sadako was murdered by being put in the well, it seems the Morgans went to the east, and went to china, and Japan, for an alternative medicine, so she could have a child, it also seems that because it was so similar to the incident in Japan, that the director made sure that people thought it was a remake, so to avoid being sued." "The Morgans might know something, we should contact them and see what they can tell us" Well, they would if they were still alive, said Schleppy. But they both committed suicide- Anna a month or two after throwing Samara in the well, and Richard when Rachel tried to find out more about the tape. Rachel and her son have become total recluses, and would never tell us "O....k...." Zebu forced a weak smile. "So, about this DVD.... I think we all should see it, then head off on whatever crazy journey lies ahead of us. Besides..." He started heading inside the house. "We have a deadline...." Schleppy looks up from his laptop for a moment. "Well, this is all interesting, but we have to get down to business. Since Miss Keller is out of the question, we'll use my magical rocket ship of DOOM to fly to Japan." Schleppy suddenly realized he didn't have a magical rocket ship of DOOM. "Or some more feasible plot device. So let's watch this DVD." Unfortunately for our heroes, the DVD was pretty badly scratched and stopped right after Ryuji was killed. Lani was understandably angry. Damn it! This was a new DVD! She took the disk out and shook it. Stupid piece of crap! Lani sighed and shook her head. "I also made a copy of the tape, I'm gonna show it to my neighbor to see if he notices anything. " "I brought over some reports I found on the net, also some freaky images of blurred faces and stuff" says Chris. "Yeah..." Realizes Chris said freaky images. "I don't want to see the pictures, okay?" "I would," says Zebu. "But I feel like I'm wasting time, just sitting here. For some reason, I feel we should be elsewhere." "Where else could we be instead? There's not much else that we can do, right?" Why dont we look over the movie again, see if we missed something? asked Schleppy. Lani walked back into the living room, and saw a man with a cloth covering his face. Her head started to ache, and she saw a vision. She was in a room, the walls were covered in blood, and everything looked like it was in static. In the corner, she saw a little girl playing with some toys. Samara The room went all fuzzy, then she was standing on the sea, beneath her feet she could she thousands of faces screaming. Then it went fuzzy again, she was in a garden, she went over to a well that lie in the center, she looked in, then she felt someone push her, she was now at the bottom of the well, and across from her, she saw an older girl, with long black hair, you could not see her face. She then fell beneath the well water, sinking faster and faster towards the bottom, and she saw a shadow in the darkness of the water. West and East attack from both sides, said the voice from her freaky vision last night. there is another, a leader, a father. It is his revenge, and the ring will continue to grow and evolve. She then woke up in the room, her head ached, and she wondered what it all could mean. "Lani! Are you ok?" Chris shouts, while bending down to pick her up. Schleppy ran for some ice water again, being the Official Ice Water Carrier. However, by the time he had returned, Lani had woken up. Schleppy put the glass down on the coffee table. "Careful, Schleppy! You'll leave a ring!" shouted Chris. Schleppy picked up the glass while he grabbed a coaster. He looked down on the ring of water he had left on the table. Suddenly, he went into a trance. "Noah? he asked into the air, with a scratchy voice. Ryuji-san?" He snapped out of it, and started searching for information on his laptop. "Aha!" he shouted. "Look at this!" "Noah Clay, the guy you mentioned having died, was Rachel Keller's ex-husband! And, according to the information in the report that I found, he died the day after her deadline. Now, here's where it gets really interesting." "Ryuji Tanaka, a Philosophy professor in Tokyo, died one day after Asakawa Kazayuki's deadline. We saw that this is true from the DVD. But in the movie, Ryuji was Asakawa Reiko's ex-husband." "You see what I'm getting at here? Even though the Japanese movie changed the gender of the main character from the actual events, the relayed events here copied the movie, not the actual ones! We have to figure this out." Lani looked completely ambushed- she wished there was more she could do. "I agree. We have to do something, but what?" Lani looked at each of them and got up. "I'll be back in a minute." She went to her room and went into the closet and eventually found her plain white dress she changed into it and walked out, but on the way caught a quick glance of herself in the mirror in her Aunt's bedroom, her parents old bedroom. She walked in and got a chill up her spine and remembered what happened exactly 10 years ago to the day. A five year old Lani walked into her parents bedroom. She was wearing her Care Bears Pajamas. "Mommy? Are you in here?" She asked nervously. Then she went into her parents walk in closet and found her mother's corpse. She looked like she had been underwater for weeks. She screamed and ran out and into the bathroom and threw up. She looked at the mirror again. "I'm slowly turning into Sadako, aren't I?" She turned around and saw her mother, looking exactly like she did a week before she died, smiling at her sadly. "Mommy?" She tried to hug the ghost, but went thru her and then her mother disappeared. Lani walked downstairs and saw the others and looked at them sadly, before sitting down. "We have to stop this. I don't want anymore kids going through what I went through when I was 5." "Listen," Schleppy said, seeing that it might not be good to put too much pressure on Lani right now. "I'll go home- there's this guy I know, he lives in Texas- J Lopez. He'll believe us, he has a good ear when it comes to these things, and he'll probably give us some plane tickets to Japan. He's kind of an inside guy when it comes to Japanese Horror, he'll surely be able to get this Hideo Nakata to talk to us. If we get to talk to Hideo, we'll be just that much closer to cracking this." Lani's eyes lit up when she realized he said tickets to Japan. "Are you serious about going to Japan? I've always wanted to go there!" Well, said Schleppy, Im not making any promises, but I promise Ill get us tickets to Japan. Lani looked really excited. "I have to pack! What should I take?" Lani started babbling. "Maybe we should all go together" Chris says, while still watching the film. "Yeah, thatd be the best," said Schleppy, getting out his cell phone to call J. Lani's phone rang and she went to get it. Schleppy talked to J for a while, and then hung up. Weve got tickets! Each of us get one, theyll be in my mail tomorrow morning. Alright, youll all have go home and pack and stuff. I have to give the tape to my neighbor, and tell my aunt, said Lani. Lani left, then returned a few minutes later- everybody was already gone. --- Alright, since this was a day late, I'm going to try and put up the next part today, then day 4 tomorrow. After that, Transvamp will take over in putting up the story. |
