HUNTING - The Good, The Bad, The DEAD - The Hunting Debate

The Bottom Line Hunting can be good, Hunting can be bad. It can 'be' so let it 'be'.

The Debate:

Ok, drop all that crap about, "Save Bambi!" and all that. I'm quite certain that these people eat meat. So how was that hamburger (a dead cow) any less worthy of life than a deer? Killing the deer is much better for the planet than that dead cow in that bun with lettuce, pickles, and onions on a toasted sesame seed bun. How you ask? Well first off you don't have people cutting down rainforests to "harvest" deer. Deer meat is better for you (reduces health costs, body fat, etc.). As of yet there's no Mad Deer Disease. No one is feeding deer steroids or food fertilized by their own feces. Deer aren't killed on conveyor belts, skinned alive and slowly butchered.

Hunting practices I despise, include this crap in Canada where you can hunt from your snowmobile, which means you can basically run down any animal. This is most often used against wolves, where there is rarely a limit on how many you can kill.

Hunting came up as a big debate a few years ago when a Northwest tribe decided to exercise their legal right to hunt a whale.

But on to other topics...

Raising Animals:

I raise chickens and rabbits. I eat meat. I kill chickens and rabbits. It is better than buying pork, chicken, and beef that is produced inhumanely and un-healthily by corporate farming.

Fishing:

Do not neglect the fish. They are an important part of the hunting season too. They deserve to be eaten. Someone has to catch them.

Corporate Farms:

What I really don't understand is how people can say hunting is bad but its ok to eat meat from corporate farms!! This is immensely ridiculous.

Fuel For The Debate:

Hunters actions, poor ethics, failure to take conservation seriously, and a failure to work with conservation groups are the main reasons why many are against hunting now days. Other reasons include the concern about the welfare of the animals from animal welfare proponents.

Economics:

Hunters contribute billions of dollars to the economy. It is a very healthy industry. And some of it goes for good things. For example in 1991, through the purchase of duck stamps, over $400 million was raised for wetland acquisition.

Ban Hunting - Possible Effects:

- Winter Starvation and Die Offs
- Disease Parasitism and Range Deterioration
- Lost Revenue and Employment
- Vehicle Collisions
- Conflicts with Urbanites
- Conflicts with Timber and Agriculture

Prepare For A Hunt:

1) Check weather updates with the National Weather Service. Plan for the worst conditions they report.

2) Regardless of the forecast, pack one set of warm clothing and one set of hot weather clothing.

3) Avoid using oils or greases on your gun in low temperatures. They can become gummy and gross.

4) Be sure to have adequate heating devices with you.

5) Be sure family and/or friends know exactly where you are.

6) Always take more food than needed for the trip, in case you can't leave on schedule.

7) Don't overwork yourself, it can make you succeptable to health problems.

8) Rest before your drive home from camp.

Preservation:

This began in ernest when President Theodore Roosevelt got behind Gifford Pinchot and others and decided to preserve some of Americas beatiful land and animals.

Recipes:

Trout & Chives

1lb. thick fillets
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper (or more to your taste)
3/4 cup sour cream
4 Tbls. dried chives
1/2 cup biscuit mix
Olive oil

Cut fillets into serving size pieces. Mix the sour cream, chives, salt and pepper. You can mix this ahead of time, but make sure it is made at least 1/2 hour before you need it. Dip fillets into sour cream mixture and then roll in biscuit mix. Heat the olive oil in a heavy skillet and fry for at least 7 minutes per side. When the fish flakes it is done. This is really so good, you'll want to make it again and again. If you want to experiment with spices other than chives, go ahead. But I love chives and sour cream with the lake trout. This is a great, simple recipe for camping!

Kiwi Venison Steaks

8 venison steaks
16 slices of bacon, cut in half
4 very ripe kiwi fruit
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
Salt and pepper to taste
3 Tbls. Worcestershire sauce

*Note: Venison is DEER

Pound out the steaks with a meat mallet to make like cube steaks. Peel and mash the kiwi fruit. Generously rub the mashed kiwi fruit on both sides of the steaks. Make sure they are well coated. Add your salt and pepper to your own taste. Now sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce on just one side of each of the steaks. Place 2 pieces of bacon on one side of each steak, and secure with wooden picks or toothpicks. Place steaks, bacon side up on grill over medium heat or in a charcoal grill place the steaks about 4 inches from the heat. Cook about 6 minutes. Now turn the steaks. Sprinkle the chopped onion on the cooked side of the steak. Now top the steaks with 2 more pieces of the bacon. Cook 6 to 10 minutes depending on your choice - medium, medium-well, well-done. Make sure the meat is fork tender, the bacon cooked and the onions soft... You will want to serve this dish immediately, it is so good.

Final Say:

Whether you hunt or not, you can't say it doesn't have its uses or benefits. Hunting is not out of control, as long as it is regulated everything should be fine. Nature needs it as much as we do. For those that just hunt for a head to mount on their wall, and don't utilize the rest of the animal, you are freakin' lame! Killing for the sake of killing is not a sport. There are many problems with hunting, or more specifically - hunters. And if these problems don't change then it is possible that hunting could become severly restricted.
