The "Forbidden" hotel

Written: Aug 02 '01
Pros:Spacious suite, excellent and friendly service
Cons:So pleasant you hate to leave this hotel
The Bottom Line: Pamper yourself in this oasis of luxury and friendliness near the Forbidden City.

The St. Regis hotel, is located in the diplomatic area of Beijing. The Friendship store is 5 minutes away, walking distance. The Forbidden City nearby, just 30 minutes walking.

When you arrive in the hotel you know you want to spent the rest of your days here…
My suite was wonderful, beautiful appointed furniture, a large black marble bathroom with all the amenities you can expect in a 5* hotel. I had a nice king size bed and in the morning it was terrible to leave this bed alone…..

Breakfast was a feast in this hotel. The large buffet had everything you could imagine. Service was overwhelming. The attitude of the personnel was very kind.I never stayed so long having breakfast as in this hotel.
For dinner several restaurants available. In general I choose for the Garden Court restaurant. I felt very comfortable here, even dining all by myself. I just felt at home here. The food is good and they have a buffet with several Chinese and Western dishes. Prices are reasonable.
Once I had dinner in the Celestian Court, the Chinese restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. However the style is quite formal. I did not feel really comfortable dining alone here. However, once talking to the waitress everything changed. She was very charming and friendly. She sowed a lot of knowledge concerning my country Holland!

All guests could join the happy hour. Here drinks and snacks were served for free.
In the Garden Lounge you can enjoy yourself with a drink or some coffee. The service is very friendly and the interior is so wonderful. Sometimes a musician is playing the harp or the piano. The Lounge is also very popular with business people.

The fitness and Spa facilities were not ready yet. I did have a look from the outside though the windows and I noticed a large indoor swimming pool and palm trees.
When visiting the historical sites, I advise not to take the organized tours. They are highly commercialised. When I went to the Chinese tour I left the hotel at 8:30 am. During the tour we spend 2,5 hour in a restaurant linked with a very large Friendship store and a jade factory linked with a large store. We only spend 1 hour and a short half hour at the wall in Badaling. It was a big disappointment for me, really. The main reason for travelling to Beijing was the Chinese Wall.

You better take a car or taxi of the St. Regis hotel. It is a save and efficient way of seeing the sites. The hotel writes down which places you want to go ( in Chinese characters)
I cancelled my other tours and arranged a taxi of the hotel to the Summer palace. Then I took the same taxi to the Forbidden City. Here I stayed all afternoon in amazement. It was easy to get information, I used the audio tour.
This tour was great and efficient. I paid only $30 for the car.

I stayed for a week in this beautiful hotel and after visiting the Forbidden City I knew this hotel gave me the feeling of being someone special. Just as the people who once lived in the Forbidden City. If they entered the city, they became someone special, had special treatment!
The St. Regis Beijing was a heaven of joy during my stay in Beijing.
