It Is What It Is, But At Least It Made Me Laugh.

Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Funny moments throughout, tons of star and figure skater cameos, decent acting
Cons:Some humor falls flat, too many crotch jokes
The Bottom Line: You already know if you like this type of movie. If you do, this one is decent.
The hubby and I felt in the mood for a few laughs today and didnt mind sitting through a good bit of mediocrity to get to them. We decided to take on Blades of Glory even though initial reviews have been ho-hum. In the end, we did find ourselves laughing plenty. As Will Ferrell-type films go, Blades of Glory ranks a bit above average and generally entertained me on this windy Sunday afternoon.

In a premise that seems doomed to failure, Blades of Glory stars Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy McElroy, former rivals banned from the figure skating leagues singles division after a staggering display of unsportsmanlike conduct. Jimmys stalker fan explains to him that due to an accidental omission in the leagues rule book, the two can continue to compete provided they do it together, in the pairs division. Add a dozen figure skater cameos, some romance, and plenty of skating to the mix and youve got yourself Blades of Glory.
As silly as the films plot sounds, it actually worked for me. Professional figure skating is rife with fodder for jokes and this film doesnt always go for the obvious laugh. I really enjoyed the subtly over-the-top on-ice analysis given by a news anchor team including Scott Hamilton. Nancy Kerrigan also makes a short but funny cameo when she serves on a panel that includes Brian Boitano, Dorothy Hamill, and Peggy Fleming. These athletes willingness to poke a little bit of fun at their sport definitely added to my enjoyment of the movie. Of course, enjoying Blades of Glory requires one to suspend all notions of reality and believability. This is Dodgeball on ice, although for me not quite as sharp or funny.
I cant believe Im saying this, but acting in Blades of Glory turns out to be pretty decent. For me, Will Ferrell is extremely hit or miss in his comedic roles. While I loved Elf, Anchorman left me cold and Talledega Nights had me staring at the screen in bewilderment. I am of the opinion that too much Will Ferrell is not typically a good thing. Fortunately, Blades of Glory gave me just enough Ferrell in a legitimately humorous role. As a tough guy skater, Ferrells experiences in an Ice Capades style show and with Sex Addicts meetings definitely made me chuckle. Of course, I firmly believe the Ice Capades are inherently funny. Heder isnt quite as funny here as the more passive member of the duo, but the two actually balance each other out pretty decently. I was especially pleased to see The Offices Jenna Fischer, quite a talented actress, as the often-forgotten sister of the very bizarre Van Waldenburg skating duo.
As Ive been pretty full of praise thus far, I should add that some jokes definitely fall flat and more might have been done in certain areas. I could most certainly do with a few less scenes of McElroy and Michaels being hit in the privates by ice, skates, and each other, although the seven-year-olds in our showing couldnt get enough of it. (On that note, I probably wouldnt take my seven-year-old to this movie.) Additionally, Blades of Glory shows us pretty much none of the other pairs competing in any competition except for the villain Van Waldenburgs. I dont know if this was a time issue or a budget one, but I think the filmmakers missed some good jokes here.
Blades of Glory made me laugh, and I think thats all one should really expect from this expanded, glorified Saturday Night Live style sketch. I will have forgotten the movie tomorrow, but I enjoyed it today. Fine cinema Blades of Glory is not. As a goofy comedy I give it four stars for being funnier than most.
