I just picked up a J5780 yesterday - mainly for scanning documents but of course I want the other function to perform well. I compared the scan speed and quality to a CANON MP160 (low-end and about $75). The canon was faster, was distinguishable from the original only by close investigation (excellent quality). The HP J5780 was obviously lower quality. I don't know whether it is the scan/copy quality or the print quality but it was not as clear and the colors were "washed" or faded. The scan process took about one full minute to scan one page to a pdf file. My old Canon F5000 took about half that time for an equivalent quality scan, which is set at 300 dpi.
The J5780 is qoing back to the store this week. Although HP has had some very good printers in the past, I don't think this is one of them and they certainly don't seem to have a handle on the scan function.
