Staropramen, Star of Prague

The Bottom Line Fantastic beer at an unbelievable price.

Pssst. Hey, you. Yeah, you. Have I got a deal for you. Ever heard of Staropramen beer? It’s from Prague, in the Czech Republic. That’s right, the country where they make Pilsner Urquell. Let me tell you, this stuff is fantastic. It’s a classic Czech pilsner, delicious and very drinkable, crisp and malty. And get this. It sells for around $4.99 a six-pack. You heard right. What a buy, what a bargain.

OK, enough with the corny sales pitch. I am really here, however, to tell you about Staropramen Czech Pilsner, a wonderful little beer that is a fantastic value. For about the same price as Budweiser, you can enjoy an authentic pilsner from the land where the original pilsner was born. Moreover, I have found Staropramen to often be fresher and in better condition than Urquell (though it is, like the latter, packaged in green glass bottles).

Staropramen is brewed in Prague and has been since 1869. In Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, Staropramen is the top selling beer, outpacing formidable rivals like Urquell and Budweiser Budvar. And let there be no doubt, the Czechs know beer. They brew some really fantastic ones and are among the largest beer drinkers in the world per capita.

Although Staropramen does have a rather assertive Saaz hop character in the finish, it is a beer that should have broad appeal. My beloved Barbara, certainly not a hophead, definitely enjoys it, although I suspect it is the beer’s crisp maltiness that she relishes most. This would be a great beer to share with your friends; they’ll think it’s an expensive import, but only you will know it’s reasonably priced because of a favorable exchange rate with the Czech Republic.

Staropramen pilsner pours to a pale gold color with a generous creamy head formation and a rather grassy hop nose. The palate is crisp, firm and malty, biscuity, lightly buttery and creamy with an overall smooth mouthfeel. A minty-grassy hop character soon emerges and segues into a bitter hop buzz in the long dry finish that lingers on the tongue after sipping. This effect will intensify as your beer warms.

For all its flavor, this is not an exceedingly complex beer. The hops and malt are fairly direct but really do shine in that directness. A wonderful Czech pilsner, I highly recommend Staropramen. To find the beer near you, you can use the importer’s handy locator engine at http://www.staropramenbeer.com/find.html . They will e-mail you the location of the closest retailer who carries it.
