I think you will find the End Pop Ups program to be quite nice. I've noticed that it will sometimes (very rarely), stop something I want to read. But you can click the blocked item and get it to come up.
You might want to check out some of the Anti-Spyware software as well. Personally, I find this to be much more valuable.
